1 PhD position in History

The Department of History is a dynamic research environment, with a particular emphasis on early modern history, gender history, digital humanities, history of racism, antisemitism and the Holocaust; see http://www.hist.uu.se . The department has some 80 teachers and researchers, and 800 students. The department also includes the Hugo Valentin Centre.
The department now announces one fully funded PhD positions where the holder will be an active member of the Gender and Work (GaW) research project at Uppsala University.
The history departments at Uppsala University and Stockholm University collaborate closely, and the PhD program is to a high degree jointly taught. Consequently, the admittance process is coordinated and representatives of both universities take part in the selection process. Applicants are encouraged to avail themselves of the information concerning the PhD program on the departments’ websites.
Gender and Work is a two-decades-long research project (2008–2029) currently financed by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) but with previous funding from the Wallenberg Foundations and the Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation. The goal of the project is to conduct empirical historical research into women’s and men’s work and to develop theoretical and methodological tools regarding work, including research infrastructure. The GaW project now welcomes candidates who are interested in using the project’s methodology in studies of other countries than Sweden. The successful candidate will have knowledge of social history sources. The candidate should also have an interest in and, preferably, experience of teamwork.
To be eligible the applicant must have a Master’s Degree in the humanities or social sciences relevant to research in history. We encourage applicants from all countries to apply. Seminars are in both Swedish and English and some compulsory courses are given in Swedish. For the position within the GaW project it is understood that the dissertation is written in English.
Please note that admission to a PhD programme at Uppsala University is highly competitive and that a completed Master’s Degree at the time of application is a prerequisite.
Successful candidates will pursue their doctoral studies full-time in Uppsala and are expected to participate actively in weekly seminars and workshops, etc. at the department and within the GaW group.
Your application can be written in English or Swedish and should include: 1) a brief CV, outlining your academic progress to date; 2) a copy of your MA thesis; 3) a statement (of no more than 6 pages) outlining your proposed research (forskningsplan). This outline should describe your research question, how it is related to the current state of research and its relevance to the GaW project. The outline should also have a short discussion of possible historical sources for answering your question and methodological considerations regarding the potential of these sources; 4) an authorized copy of your Master’s degree and course grades (if the degree was taken at a Swedish university, a LADOK extract will suffice); 5) a copy of your BA thesis (if available); 6) an account of how long it took you to complete your MA thesis.

About the employment
The position is a 4-year full-time employment which qualifies for all Swedish social benefits, such as paid parental leave. The position might also entail teaching and other assignments up to 20% of the full-time position (extending the position proportionally). Salary According to local agreement for PhD students and teaching assistants.
The employment is a temporary position according to the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5 § 7. Scope of employment 100 %.Starting date 2023-12-01or soon thereafter as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
