Finnish is one of the sections at the Department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch and German, which is part of the Faculty of Humanities. The department has about 50 employees and approximately 1200 students each academic year.

Teaching in the Finnish section focuses on the study of the Finnish language in Finland and Sweden, Finnish and Sweden Finnish literature and culture, as well as didactic perspectives within these fields. Since 2013, the Finnish section has had a special commitment from the government to work with with teacher training in the national minority language Finnish in preschool, primary school, upper secondary school and university. TIn 2022-2024, the department is also tasked with strengthening and developing the revitalisation and monitoring of Finnish as a minority language. Key research areas in the section are Finnish as minority language, Sweden Finnish as a language and Sweden Finnish culture, Finnish as part of multilingualism in literature and educational contexts, didactics of language and literature teaching, language attitudes, sociolinguistics, political discourses in Finland, and corpus linguistics.

Subject area
The doctoral studies will be conducted within linguistics, literary studies or didactics (language or literature) with a focus on the Finnish language. We welcome particularly research plans that concern the Sweden Finnish minority, Finnish in Sweden, multilingualism, language attitudes, minority language research or other related topics.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Finnish stipulates that applicants must have completed at least 30 ECTS within second cycle courses with a special focus on Finnish, including a thesis of at least 15 ECTS.

In addition, proficiency in Swedish and English language (reading, writing and oral skills), is required. National and international students must be able to show equivalent qualifications.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the PhD programme. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: the candidates’ documented interest and knowledge in a relevant field of research, a capacity for analytical thinking, as well as an ability to take initiative and to conduct research independently and in a creative manner. Written and oral proficiency in both Finnish and Swedish is a requirement. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the MA thesis, references, relevant experience, interviews, the candidate’s written motivation for seeking the position, and possibility for the Department to provide supervisor with suitable knowledge within the research area of the application. The research plan is assessed based on relevance, originality and feasibility within the given time frame.

Terms of employment
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
