PhD student in Experimental Physics with Specialization in Organic Electronics at Umeå University

Updated: about 1 year ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37 000 students and about 4 700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. And the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is what it is all about. But also about delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. This is simply where the future is built.

The Department of Physics is now looking for a PhD student in experimental physics, with a focus on organic electronics.

Project description
The PhD project comprises the study and development of a novel technology in organic electronics: a light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC). Through basic studies of dynamic doping and light emission in thin semiconducting films, in combination with applied material and device development, the goal is a flexible, efficient and uniquely sustainable LEC device, which enables new and important applications in, for instance, medtech. The PhD project will be executed in The Organic Photonics and Electronics Group, and information on the group's ongoing activities can be found at: www.opeg-umu.se

This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. Read more: https://wise-materials.org

All early-stage researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School (https://wise-materials.org/research/graduate-school ), an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry.

As a PhD student your main task is to perform research and to participate in PhD courses so that a PhD degree will be awarded. The job tasks may include teaching and other institutional work (up to a maximum of 20%). The employment is time limited to four years of full-time work or up to five years if part-time teaching is performed.

Qualifications
The basic competence is acquired when an advanced level degree has been awarded, which comprises at least 240 ECTS credits, of which at least 60 ECTS credits must be at an advanced level.
The specific requirement to be accepted to the PhD education in Experimental Physics constitutes the award of at least 120 ECTS credits in Physics and Chemistry, of which at least 90 ECTS credits must be in Physics.
The award of corresponding credits in another credit system can also be considered a fulfillment of the competence requirements.
These requirements must be met at the time of employment, but not at the time of application.
The should requirements for the position constitute:
·          Strong skills in English, as regards to both oral and written communication.
·          Experience with experimental research, especially within the subject area of organic electronics, is considered a merit.
·         Since the research environment is multidisciplinary and multicultural, you are expected to be interested and thrive in collaborations within a dynamic setting.  It is further of uttermost importance that you exhibit a strong motivation for research in general and the PhD project in particular, that you are interested in both experimental and theoretical research tasks, and that you are goal oriented and capable of leading projects independently and in collaboration with other researchers.

The application
The application must include:
·         A letter that distinctly and clearly describes your qualifications, research interests and motivation for application.
·         A curriculum vitae.
·         Certified copies of diplomas and completed university courses with grades.
·         A copy of the examination project and potential publications.
·         Contact information of three reference persons.

Other information
The closing date for application is 2023-03-15. The applications must be submitted via our e-recruitment system Varbi. The application must be in English (preferred) or Swedish. All documents must be uploaded in pdf-format.

The employment is time limited to four years of full-time studies, with starting time in August 2023 or according to agreement. The salary placement follows the established practice for doctoral employment at Umeå University. According to the Higher Education Ordinance, the decision on employment cannot be appealed.
