The Department of English is part of the Faculty of Humanities and has about 40 employees and 750 students. The teaching focuses on English language proficiency, English linguistics, and English literature. The main research areas are English language and literature.

Linguistic research interests among our members of staff cover areas such as academic and professional uses of English, varieties of English, language variation and change, English as a lingua franca, sociolinguistics, syntax, and the teaching of English. Subject area
The Department of English is offering one fully-funded PhD position in English Linguistics. The position involves a full tuition fee waiver and a monthly salary. It is tenable for five years, which includes 20 % departmental duties.

As a PhD student at the Faculty of Humanities you have the opportunity to participate in the Faculty’s Doctoral School, which offers courses characterised by interdisciplinarity and cooperation across subjects. The Doctoral School also gives you the chance to improve the quality of your education thanks to the interchange provided by the community of PhD students from other subjects and departments.

The successful candidate should have a solid background and training in English Language, Linguistics, or Applied Linguistics, as evidenced by previous experience and qualifications. The Department welcomes applications from well-qualified candidates from all parts of the world.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 ECTS credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

An applicant meets the special eligibility requirements for doctoral studies in English if he or she has received a passing grade on course work of at least 30 ECTS credits in English at the advanced level (alternatively in linguistics or comparative literature), including a thesis of at least 15 ECTS credits.

Additionally, the applicant must document proficiency in English as measured by one of the following internationally recognised language proficiency tests: the TOEFL, including TWE, with a result of at least 630 points (written test), 267 points (computer-based test)/109 points (internet-based test); Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (A or B); or the IELTS with a total score of at least 7.5 (and no part below 7); or an equivalent.

The eligibility requirements may also be achieved by an applicant who has acquired equivalent proficiencies either within Sweden or abroad, but it is the Department of English that decides what counts as an equivalent.

The qualification requirements must be met by the application deadline.

Selection
Selection from among applicants meeting the general entry requirements and special eligibility requirements is to be made with reference to their ability to benefit from the programme. The selection is made by the Research Committee. The selection is made with regard to the following criteria:

  • Previous education in general. Assessment of both depth and breadth of previous education.
  • Scholarly production. Based on a Bachelor’s thesis, a Master’s thesis or other academic papers, the potential of the applicant to benefit from the education is assessed. The assessment should also take into consideration the aspect of time, that is, to what extent the applicant has shown the ability to meet his or her previous scholarly obligations within given time constraints. In addition, the extent to which the applicant provides evidence of developing academic proficiency is considered. The scholarly production is judged with regard to critical and analytical ability, independence and creativity.
  • The applicant must enclose a research plan which should cover the research problem and an outline of the research project. The research plan is to be assessed according to it relevance, originality and feasibility within given time constraints (that is full-time work during a four-year period of doctoral studies or two years for a licentiate).
  • Availability of supervision.
  • Ability to collaborate. The ability of the applicant to collaborate with others is to be determined by personal references, certificates or interviews.
  • Other. The applicant’s mastery of written and spoken English at the level necessary for completing the PhD programme is to be assessed by means of the essays submitted and interviews.
  • When admitting and selecting applicants for doctoral studies in English, the Department Board will abide by Faculty regulations.

    Terms of employment
    Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

    The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

    Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but will also engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
