Offer Description

Do you want to research innovative solutions to make better use of waste heat and what the district heating system of the future should look like? If your answer is yes, take the chance to do a PhD in a dynamic, international research environment.

Would you like to contribute to the ongoing green transition? As part of the Green Transition North project, we are looking for a PhD student to research innovative solutions to make better use of waste heat. You will be part of a strategic investment where we work together to go from words to action in the green transition.

The Division of Energy Science at Luleå University of Technology is looking for a Ph.D. student in Energy Engineering, who wants to delve deeper into what the district heating system of the future should look like. We collaborate with companies and industries in both research and student projects. Our research has high international standards, and we collaborate with researchers around the world.

Subject description
Energy Engineering concerns the development of technologies and processes in order to build a sustainable energy supply. The research focuses on bioenergy technologies and energy-efficiency in industry and society

Project description
The project aims to improve the use of waste heat and study what the future's district heating system might look like. The research will focus on applications where waste heat can be used (buildings, greenhouses, etc.), the transport of heat (district heating networks, local networks) and future waste heat sources (e.g. from electrolysis in hydrogen production) as well as the integration between these systems. The main aim is to develop different methods/models that can be used to improve these systems so that the heat can be used energy efficiently.

The work is carried out as part of the Green Transition North project, which aims to promote sustainable change in northern Sweden. The project takes place in close cooperation between researchers and industry and small and medium sized enterprises. The main funder is the European Regional Development Fund.

You will participate in joint courses, seminars, etc., within TFM and Creaternity research school.

Duties
Most of your working time will be devoted to your own research project. You work independently with your research, and communicate your results in scientific journals and participation at national and international conferences. You also study third-cycle courses. In addition, you can have the opportunity to try the teacher role. As a researcher, you work as a neutral party in many contexts, which provides a great opportunity to be involved in challenging development projects. You will have two or three supervisors who support you in your work, see contact information's below.

Qualifications
We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate with the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. You have a master's degree in energy technology, mechanical engineering, engineering physics or equivalent. The applicant should have a strong interest in energy-related questions. We also welcome applicants with an expected degree before the summer of 2023.

Additional requirements
- Very good oral and written proficiency in English.
- Good skills in academic writing.
- Ability to work independently and take own initiatives as well as being able to penetrate new research areas on your own.

The following competencies and knowledge are meritorious
- Knowledge of district heating systems and the use of waste heat
- Simulation of energy use in buildings (residences, premises, greenhouses, etc.)
- Good knowledge of heat and mass transport.

See also the general curriculum for education at post-graduate level in Energy Engineering .

Most employees at the subject of Energy Engineering are currently men, therefore, we welcome female applicants.

Further information
The PhD position includes a fixed-term full-time employment for 4 years, teaching and other department duties may be added with up to 20%. You will be employed at Luleå University of Technology, and be located in Luleå, Sweden.
