Offer Description
Project description
Third-cycle subject: Electrochemistry
Copper and copper-based materials are promising catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) toward multicarbon products. However, the performance and product selectivity of the CO2 reduction varies with the catalyst surface structure and the geometry of the surface-active sites. In this project, you will electrochemically synthesize well-defined copper nanostructured surfaces and tune the active sites´ geometry to tune the selectivity of the CO2 reduction towards different carbon products. You will investigate the effect of different halides and electrolyte anions on the electrochemical surface nanostructuring of copper. The prepared catalysts will be characterized using electron and scanning probe microscopy and x-ray spectroscopy techniques in combination with cyclic voltammetry. For further details on the methods that we use to electrochemically modify copper, read more here . We are looking for a PhD candidate highly motivated and with a background in electrochemistry.
This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. All early-stage researchers recruited into the WISE program will be a part of the WISE Graduate School , an ambitious nationwide program of seminars, courses, research visits, and other activities to promote a strong multi-disciplinary and international network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry.
Supervision: Professor Tore Brinck is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
