PhD student in Construction Management and Building Technology – Digital twin for sustainable facility management

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: 15 Oct 2021

Luleå University of Technology experiences rapid growth with world-class expertise within several research domains. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results. Drawing on our location in the Arctic region, we create global societal benefit. Our research is carried out in close collaboration with companies such as LKAB, Ericsson, Boliden, ABB and Epiroc and with leading universities around the world. Luleå University of Technology has an annual turnover of SEK 1.8 billion. We are today 1,770 members of staff and have 17,200 students.

In the coming years, investments amounting to many billions will be made in large projects in the regions of Norrbotten and Västerbotten in Northern Sweden. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and offers a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand.

There is now a need to strengthen our research group Construction Management and Building Technology. With a new PhD student shall we build knowledge in how digital twins can create long-term and sustainable development for facility management.  Focus for the research project is on how sensor-based systems could contribute for a circular economy with new technology for using and facility management of buildings.

The research group of Construction management and Building technology conducts research and education in the construction process - from early planning and design through construction to facility management. Our core competencies are in management and automation of the construction process as well as in industrialised construction and production systems. The research group is globally one of five leading actor in the research area and has around 30 employees. The research is applied and based on current issues in close collaboration with construction, real estate and civil engineering stakeholders; companies and other organizations.

Subject description
Construction management and Building technology includes technical solutions, tools, methods and organization for planning, information management and control of a sustainable and integrated industrial construction process with related business processes.

Project description
Within CREATERNITY, which is one of Luleå University of Technology's new future areas, the project, together with the state owned property manager Akademiska Hus, will provide understanding and expand knowledge of how sensor-based data together with simulated process data can contribute to long-term sustainable facility management. The PhD project is focused on identifying, following up and evaluating users 'and property managers' needs for comfort, environmental and economic effects from a life cycle perspective. The first phase of the project will include in-depth study of data structures for the building's life cycle and information standards, as well as analyzes and simulations of various business processes and measured data materials in case studies.

In the second stage, knowledge developes about how combined data sources for use and facility management can be used as a basis for developing methods that support the transformation of information along a buildings lifecycle. As the primary context for case studies, Luleå University of Technology's Campus buildings are used, starting with the existing building stock. When a new house on Campus is to be built, subsequent studies will analyze the possibility of expanded sensor-based systems to be connected to the building. The analyzes will therefore take into account the special conditions and wishes with regard to information structures and information standards as well as standards for a building's life cycle.

The PhD project is carried out in collaboration between Luleå University of Technology, Akademiska Hus as property owners and with associated construction designers, as well as other relevant actors for sustainable design and facility management.

Duties
As a PhD student, you work with a doctoral degree as the final goal after the corresponding four years of full-time doctoral education. The PhD program includes both training in scientific work and the implementation of PhD courses with relevance to the research area. The tasks also include departmental duty in the form of teaching and certain administrative work to a maximum extent of 20% of full-time. The work as a PhD student means great opportunities to define and plan their daily tasks and how they are to be carried out in dialogue with different parties.

Location is Luleå. The work involves travel and shorter stays in another place.

Qualifications
For eligibility, a master's degree (or equivalent basic eligibility requirements, (Higher Education Ordinance, Chapter 7, Section 39)) is required in Computer Science, Architecture, Civil Engineering or similar. As the research work is very communicative, we require that you have a very good ability to express yourself in speech and writing in English.

Qualifying are:
- knowledge and skills in programming and computer systems,
- knowledge and skills in digitalisation of building processes,
- ability to work independently and ability to formulate and tackle scientific problems.

Merits are:
- knowledge and skills in mobile and distributed computer systems,
- knowledge and skills in the design or operation/management of buildings,
- good knowledge of Swedish, in speech and writing.

As we constantly work for an equal workplace, we are happy to see women applicants. We welcome both newly graduated applicants as well as applicants with many years of work experience.
