The Department of Information Technology holds a leading position in both research and education at all levels. Project description
The research project in which the PhD student will work aims to discover fundamental principles and rules that govern the possibilities for provably correct and efficient scheduling, in particular for real-time systems. Scheduling theory mixes aspects of theoretical computer science, operations research, and computer engineering.

The project aims to carry out basic research that is mainly mathematically and theoretically driven. Examples of research that can be carried out in the project are to design new scheduling algorithms that are provably correct and optimal, or to demonstrate the computational complexity of scheduling problems using tools from theoretical computer science.

Duties
A PhD student is expected to devote their time to graduate education mainly. The rest of the duties may involve teaching at the Department, including also some administration, to at most 20%.

Requirements
To meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must

  • hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in computer science, computer engineering, mathematics or a similar subject, or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

We are looking for candidates with

  • a high level of motivation and autonomy,
  • a genuine interest in algorithms and theoretical computer science,
  • excellent study results,
  • proficiency in spoken and written English.

Personality traits, such as thoroughness, creativity and problem-solving skills, are essential.

Additional qualifications
Experience in one or more of complexity theory, analysis of algorithms, discrete mathematics, and operating systems is valued.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines .
