We are looking for a PhD student in Chemistry

Your work assignments

The doctoral student will participate in a project focusing on wastewater-based epidemiology of illicit drugs and environmental pollutants using chromatography hyphenated high resolution mass spectrometry. Analytical methods will be developed for targeted, suspect and nontarget workflows of wastewater samples. Other specific tasks include: setting up a laboratory workflow to systematically integrate relevant information, plan and conducting field sampling, maintenance of analytical instruments, perform chemical analysis and data analysis and disseminating the results.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master’s level in Chemistry or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in Chemistry. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

The successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge in organic analytical chemistry and have experience with chromatography and mass spectrometric analysis. Experience with organic sample preparation and extraction techniques are valuable merits. Knowledge of programming languages such as R or Python for data processing and analysis is also a good merit.

The successful candidate should be creative, flexible and analytically oriented with a solid theoretical background. Proficiency in written and spoken English is a requirement. General assessment criteria include good interpersonal skills and an ability to cooperate as well as the ability and suitability otherwise required to perform the duties in a good manner.

Your workplace

The project will be carried out at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology (IFM) , in close collaboration with the Department of Thematic Studies – Environmental Change . The Division of Chemistry carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within chemistry at Linköping University. Both departments conduct state of the art applied research to advance knowledge on the fate and risks of potentially harmful chemicals to humans and the environment. The departments have an excellent infrastructure for chemical and environmental research, including high end mass spectrometers such as high-resolution LC- and GC-MS with ion mobility capability, LC-qToF, and several low-resolution LC-MS and GC-MS systems. Clean room sample preparation facilities are also available.

The employment

When taking up the post, you will be admitted to the program for doctoral studies. More information about the doctoral studies at each faculty is available at Doctoral studies at Linköping University

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

Starting date by agreement.
