The department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch and German is part of the Faculty of Humanities with about 60 employees and over 1500 students per academic year. The Section for Baltic Languages ​​is part of the Department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch and German. Teaching and research in the section ​​is focused on the Baltic languages, Latvian, Lithuanian and Old Prussian. Central research areas within the subject are Baltic linguistics, Baltic language history, dialectology and the history of the Baltic written languages.

Project description
The doctoral student's dissertation work will be conducted within the framework of employment as a doctoral student in Baltic Languages. We particularly welcome applications with planned dissertation projects that combine a philological and digital perspective that could be carried out within the scope of the national research school "Early Languages, Digital Philology" (DigPhil).

The purpose of DigPhil is to create a strong and contemporary research training environment in early languages (up until and including the 18th century), where modern philologists are trained in disciplinary traditions while gaining solid competence in language technology. Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the applicant must have successfully completed advanced level courses of at least 30 credits in the main area of ​​Baltic languages, including a degree project of at least 15 credits. It is additionally required that the applicant has knowledge of English and has or undertakes to seek to acquire knowledge of Swedish, Danish or Norwegian as soon as possible. The language skills must include the ability to read, speak and write in these languages.

The eligibility requirements can also be met by those who acquired essentially equivalent competence within or outside of Sweden.

Corresponding assessment of the eligibility is prepared and decided at the department in accordance with local procedures.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the doctoral studies. The selection is made on the basis of the following criteria (listed without any particular order of priority):

  • The applicant's documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area
  • The applicant's previous scientific production
  • The applicant's research plan
  • The applicant's ability to cooperate
  • Available supervisory resources.

The applicants will also be assessed with the Swedish Research Council's four basic criteria: the scientific quality of the project, originality, the applicant's competence, and feasibility.

Terms of employment
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
