PhD student in Automatic Control with Focus on Agile Robotic Sensing and Inference

Updated: about 2 months ago
Deadline: 20 Apr 2023

We have the power of over 40,000 students and co-workers. Students who provide hope for the future. Co-workers who contribute to Linköping University meeting the challenges of the day. Our fundamental values rest on credibility, trust and security. By having the courage to think freely and innovate, our actions together, large and small, contribute to a better world. We look forward to receiving your application!

We are looking for a PhD student in Automatic Control.

Your work assignments

State estimation and inference play imperative roles in reaching high-performance robotic autonomy. Recent advances in sensor technologies have provided enormous possibilities and challenges ranging from hardware utility and data collection to information processing and predictive inference. Meanwhile, autonomous systems have been deployed to numerous use cases, where universally adaptive sensing and inferential techniques are preferred or required.

In this PhD project, we investigate novel methodologies for state estimation and inference in robotics. A series of studies are to be conducted with consideration of constraints in kinodynamic systems and sensor data using uncertainty-aware motion representation and statistical machine learning. The theoretic-based methods are to be further validated in real-world scenarios in a performance-oriented manner.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have a master's degree in computer science, mechatronics, electrical engineering, engineering physics, applied mathematics, or similar from an internationally visible university with excellent academic results.

We expect you to be proficient in both oral and written communication in English. Dedication to performing cutting-edge research is necessary. You should be confident in working on mathematics (in particular, statistics) and have very solid programming skills in C++ and a scripting language such as Matlab or Python. Pre-knowledge about (statistical) sensor fusion, particularly with on-manifold variables, is an advantage. It is also preferable that you have hands-on experience with developing real-time systems in ROS using common sensors such as IMU, camera or LiDAR.

Your workplace

The Division of Automatic Control at Linköping University carries out research, undergraduate and postgraduate education within control, sensor fusion, system identification, autonomous systems, robotics, complex networks, optimization, and learning control.
