at the Department of Meteorology . Closing date: 31 January 2020.
At the Department of Meteorology (MISU) at Stockholm University we conduct research and education in an international environment within four main areas: Atmospheric physics, Dynamic meteorology, Physical oceanography and Chemical meteorology. In all these areas there is a strong focus on the climate and on processes important for the climate and its development. The department includes some 75 individuals, of which about 30 are teachers and scientists, 30PhD students and 15 administrative and technical staff. The department is part of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research that, together with other departments at the university covers research of most of the important aspects of the climate system and the Swedish e-Science Research Centre , where we together with KTH and other universities develop e-Science tools and infrastructure to promote scientific breakthroughs in climate science.

Northern European shelf and coastal seas inlcude some of the most vulnerable seas and coastlines of Europe to a changing climate. These seas host important fishing areas and socio-economic infrastructures. There are, however, many important oceanic processes that are poorly understood. It is therefore of great interest to develop a fundamental understanding of the dynamical drivers that influences the climate on the shelves. The successful candidate will develop expertise in climate dynamics regarding the shelf seas and focus on the exchange of water masses from the open ocean to the shelf seas, causes of regional sea level variability and change, and the dynamics of extreme temperature and sea level events over the shelves at present and in future climate scenarios. To reach these goals, the successful candidate will primarily work with satellite-sensed fields but also combine these with ocean general circulation models, climate models and advanced statistical models. This project has received full funding from the Swedish Space Agency.
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
In order to meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of meteorology stipulates that at least 90 points must be in one of the subjects meteorology, oceanography, physics or chemistry, at least 15 credits must be in mathematics, and an independent project work corresponding to at least 15 credits must have been completed. The requirements can also be met by acquiring the corresponding knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.
The qualification requirements must be fulfilled before the start of the employment.
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity: the candidates’ documented knowledge in a relevant field of research, written and oral proficiency in both Swedish and English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the candidate’s written motivation for seeking the position. Interviews will probably take part in Ferbruary/March.
