Linköping University is looking for a

PhD student in Ageing and Social Change

as part of the international research project ‘The Future of Intergenerational Solidarity beyond the Pandemic: Empirically-Informed Ethical Analysis and Public Deliberation’

formally based at the Division Ageing and Social Change (ASC), Department of Culture and Society (IKOS)

The PhD student in Ageing and Social Change at ASC will work in the international comparative research project ‘The Future of Intergenerational Solidarity beyond the Pandemic: Empirically-Informed Ethical Analysis and Public Deliberation’. A PhD student in this project will benefit from international cooperation with scientific partners and policy stakeholders as well as from active participation in workshops and conferences over the period of their involvement. As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

The Division and Research Environment Ageing and Social Change (ASC) conducts leading-edge research on key issues of the ageing society. ASC also provides basic and advanced academic education and contributes to the proliferation of knowledge about ageing within society. Read more at www.ageing.se .

A successful applicant must hold a master’s degree in Sociology, Political Sciences, Social Policy, Philosophy, Demography, other social-, political- or cultural sciences or a related discipline, or completed courses with a minimum of 240 ECTS, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses in these fields. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

A successful candidate should have a substantial interest in issues of ageing, life course and social change, in particular in regional, national and European policies, and in the research areas of the research project ‘The Future of Intergenerational Solidarity beyond the Pandemic: Empirically-Informed Ethical Analysis and Public Deliberation’. It should be combined with a specific interest in ethical issues, e.g., related to population ageing, intergenerational relationships, solidarity and equity, and/or societal dynamics, crises and social policy, in order to carry out research in this area. Documented academic experiences in and engagement with these issues are especially meriting, and so is the willingness to prepare the research results for different target groups in society.

A successful candidate should have very good knowledge of qualitative research methods, while knowledge in mixed methods and experience in their application in social and behavioural sciences, in particular in participatory research are special merits. Key competences and experiences should include good knowledge in document and media analysis, stakeholder interviews and focus groups, and the preparation, organization, implementation, and evaluation of the participatory processes. Documented expertise concerning relevant analysis software is a merit and so is expertise in quantitative methods.

Very good knowledge of the Swedish and English language, both verbal and written, as well as the ability to work well in dialogue with others is expected.

The employment has a duration of four years’ full-time equivalent. You will initially be employed for a period of one year. The employment will subsequently be renewed for periods of maximum duration two years, depending on your progress through the study plan. The employment may be extended up to a maximum of five years, based on the amount of teaching and departmental duties you have carried out. Further extensions can be granted in special circumstances.

The salary of PhD students is determined according to a locally negotiated salary progression.
