Department of Forest Economics

The Department of Forest Economics is engaged in research and education in circular bioeconomy from a business administration, natural resource economics, economics, and policy perspective, focusing on the sustainable development of forest-related natural resources. The Department contributes to education at the Faculty of Forest Sciences, and it is responsible for Bachelor and Master degree programs, as well as offering Ph.D. education in business administration and economics. The Department is located at two campuses: Ultuna, in Uppsala, and in Umeå. The Department has strong domestic and international research connections. We are a key partner in the joint SLU and Umeå University - CERE ; we host the head office of European Forest Institute’s Forest Bioeconomy Network , among many others.

Management of Forestry Resources in Sweden from a Bioeconomy Perspective
Research subject: Business administration
Description

The conditions for forestry management in Sweden change due to technical advancements, climate change, market developments and shifts in political objectives. Increased attention has been given to the role of forests in sustainable development, with new perspectives reflected in bioeconomy concepts, and new expectations on forestry management. Private forest owner management is undergoing a transition, accompanied by a growing diversity within the stakeholder group of forestry owners. Knowledge about forest owners’ management, personal objectives and organizational preferences needs to be further developed.

The research that the PhD student will be part of focuses on the role of the forest owner’s contribution to sustainable development. The PhD student will have the opportunity to develop the research area with concrete research questions, and contribute to its development.

We are welcoming a person that has a commitment to sustainable development and value creation in privately owned forestry coupled with a strong interest in research.

Work tasks

A PhD student is expected to take courses and conduct research. The candidate will have opportunities to contribute in teaching. These tasks are not a part of the PhD studies, hence prolongs the study time to ensure a four year time for classes and research.  

The PhD student’s task is to write a PhD dissertation and develop skills as a researcher. The research project serves as a framework where the PhD student plays the central role in collection of data (e.g., interviews, observations, other data). These tasks will involve communication with stakeholders in the forestry sector. The tasks for a PhD student is to write academic articles and reports that are adapted to various audiences (in English and Scandinavian language).

Requirements

A master’s degree in business administration or forestry/agriculture master’s with a minor in business administration. Spoken and written English and a Scandinavian language is required.

Merits

The applicant is expected to have a solid business administration background with methodological skills using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. It is a merit to:  

• to have an understanding of the forestry sector’s sustainability transition, the Swedish forest sector, its owners and the forest industry,
• a master thesis in a relevant subject, and/or
• having authored academic and/or popular science publications.

Further, it is also a merit to have experiences of:

• quantitative methods, e.g., interviews and participant observations,
• quantitative methods, including statistical analysis techniques, and
• scientific research project work.

To qualify for third-cycle (Doctoral) courses and study programmes, you must have a second-cycle (Master’s) qualification. Alternatively, you must have conducted a minimum of four years of full-time study, of which a minimum of one year at second-cycle level.
