PhD Positions in Astronomy open at Stockholm University

Updated: 26 days ago
Deadline: 23 Apr 2024

The Department of Astronomy at Stockholm University invites applications in the following research areas:

Solar Physics: One position is for a PhD student who will work with Dr. Dan Kiselman and Prof. Jorrit Leenaarts on current problems in solar physics using observations with the Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope (SST) on La Palma. The focus will be on the analysis of data from the advanced hyperspectral imaging instruments HeSP and MiHI. These are microlens-based 3D spectrographs of a kind that represent the future in observational solar physics and are planned for the European Solar Telescope (EST). Potential projects include searching for signatures of Alfvén waves in spicules shooting off the solar limb by measuring their magnetic fields and studying time-dependent formation of molecular spectral lines.

Supernovae: One position is for a PhD student who will work with Prof. Jesper Sollerman on observations of supernovae. The underlying goal is to understand the explosion physics and progenitor stars of these explosions, and to constrain the final fates of the most massive stars. We are currently partners in the Zwicky Transient Facility project, and are actively preparing for the upcoming Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, for which we have full data rights.
