PhD position in the discipline of tourism studies

The Department of Economics, Geography, Law and Tourism (EJT) conducts research and education in the subjects: business administration, law, economics, statistics, geography and tourism studies. 

Tourism studies and Etour (the tourism research center at Mid Sweden University) is a leading academic tourism environment in Northern Europe. It is home to the first Scandinavian PhD program in tourism studies established in 2009. The Department offers an international and multidisciplinary research environment. The position in question is financed with faculty funds and focused on one or more of the following strategic research areas:

• Nature tourism
• E-Tourism
• Event tourism
• Tourism's socio-economic effects
• Destination development
• Cultural tourism
• Tourism and local communities

Position duties

The successful applicant is expected to complete the assignments and tasks associated with the PhD program in tourism studies. These may include administrative tasks, teaching and other duties including research in other projects.

Basic entry requirements

One of the following requirements must be fulfilled for applicants to be considered for these positions:

• (i) Successful completion of a second-cycle (Master’s) program;
• (ii) Successful completion of 240 university credits (ECTS) overall of which at least 60 were at the second-cycle (Master’s) level;
• (iii) Successful completion of equivalent programs either in Sweden or abroad.

Additional Entry Requirements

To be accepted to the PhD program in Tourism Studies, applicants must have at least 90 university credits in the areas of tourism studies, human geography or business administration, or must demonstrate equivalent qualifications. In addition, the successful applicant is required to have the necessary language skills in order to complete the program (see below for further clarification).

Evaluation criteria

Applications will be evaluated on the following criteria:

• Documented knowledge in relevant subject areas in order to pass the doctoral education,
• Motives for undertaking postgraduate training and proposed research idea,
• Competence regarding scientific analysis and presentation,
• Ability to express oneself in written and oral English,
• The working language at Mid-Sweden University is Swedish. It is desirable to have the ability to use a Scandinavian language.

Employment process

Processing of the appointment will comply with the provisions in Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance, and will be carried out in accordance with Mid Sweden University’s Employment Procedures .

Terms of employment

This is a fulltime position. The position counts as employment corresponding to 2 years of doctoral studies and intends to lead to a licentiate degree. Administrative tasks and teaching may be added. Rules regarding employment as a doctoral student can be found in the Högskoleförordningen (1993:100), chapter 5 §§ 1-7.

In this case, up to a licentiate degree with the possibility of continuing to a doctoral degree if financial and other conditions exist. 

Initial doctoral student positions are valid for a maximum of one year, after which the position may be renewed by no longer than two years at a time. Provisions regarding doctoral studentship employment can be found in the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), Chapter 5, Sections 1-7.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with Mid Sweden University guidelines for PhD students.

Entry: Expected entry is 1 September 2023 or according to an agreement between the department and the candidate.
