PhD position in social epidemiology (social networks and health behaviors)

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). This doctoral project brings together an international team of researchers from Karolinska Institutet, Linkoping University (Institute of Analytical Sociology) and other collaborators from the Netherlands (Erasmus MC) and United Kingdom (Imperial Collage). We will collect a novel complete social network data from schools and study how health behaviors (traditional and alternative nicotine product use) spreads in social networks. Our team is truly interdisciplinary combing epidemiology, statistics, and social sciences.

The increasing use of social media and alternative nicotine products, i.e., e-cigarettes and Swedish snus, poses new threats to stall the progress of tobacco control. Vast research shows how smoking spreads in social networks, but it remains unclear how alternative nicotine products and online interactions affect this spread. The doctoral student will write a comprehensive PhD dissertation on how novel health behaviors spread in social networks in schools and the whole population and analyze the potential impacts of a network-based intervention. The student will use data from our new data collection and Swedish register data. The project will be conducted using social network analysis methods and causal inference methods. The tasks of the PhD student will involve helping with data collection, literature review, study design, data analysis, scientific writing, and presenting results at international conferences.

(A) and (B)can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education .

The ideal candidate should have a background in social epidemiology or sociology. Demonstrated knowledge of advanced statistical methods is essential. Previous experience in social network analysis is highly valued or strong motivation to learn these methods is necessary. Knowledge of R or a similar programming language is necessary. The candidate needs good skills in English, both written and spoken. Swedish language skills would be desirable but not necessary.

We attach great importance to personal qualities in this recruitment. We hope to find a doctoral student who will be self-motivated and able to interact and contribute to a team. We expect the student to take an active role in the project and be willing and able to work independently.

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
