PhD position in Marine Technology

Being a PhD student at the Division of Marine Technology at Chalmers offers a unique opportunity to work with colleagues from all over the world, and to work internationally by attending conferences and visit other research partners.

We are looking for highly motivated and skilled PhD students with cross-disciplinary knowledges who have a genuine interest in working with any of the four research project areas:

A. Propeller-hull interaction effects for wind-assisted ships
An improved understanding of Propeller-Hull Interaction effects is important for accurately predicting ship power. This is becoming even more important in the near future as alternative energy systems are being introduced on ships. Calm water predictions can be done with an acceptable accuracy, but very few studies of the propulsion system have been done in a more realistic operating conditions. Wind-assisted ships (WASP) fall into this category due to varying headings, waves and dynamics of propeller loading, where neither the propeller-hull interaction effects are well understood nor are the computational tools well developed. The objective of this project is to advance on this topic, both with respect to developing computational methods as well as for the physical understanding of this problem. B. Safe ship collision and grounding hull design for small modular reactor-powered ships
Tougher EU requirements on environmental and climate emissions from shipping have once again stimulated discussions about the pros and cons and the risks of small modular reactors (SMRs) in commercial shipping. There is now a strong increased interest among shipowners, authorities, universities and research institutes, especially in Europe, to study and evaluate SMR. The project's purpose and goal is to investigate barriers within regulations for ship design/construction and propose solutions for commercial ships if SMR is introduced. The main focus of the project is to study the construction and resilience of the hull for these scenarios. There will be tougher requirements on side planking structure and hull beam for ships with SMR compared to those without SMR. The question is how the ships of the future should be constructed, and how existing ships should be adapted when installing SMR. (Contact person: Professor Jonas Ringsberg)

C. Development of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) for marine acoustics and FSI problems related to Arctic operations
The Lattice Boltzmann Method has emerged as a powerful numerical technique. We will develop the method and code to investigate on a general basis in order to simulate the noise from the propeller and other devices. With the aim of the exploration of the Arctic, the tool will be further used to investigate ocean conditions with ice. (Contact person: Associate Professor Hua-Dong Yao)

D. Maritime logistics of Carbon Dioxide
Capture and storage of CO2 is one of several tools to reach the world's climate goals, which includes transport of the CO2 from the emitter to the storage site. Ship transport will be a highly relevant mode of transport. Thus, it is likely that a fleet of specialized CO2 tankers will emerge. This is an applied, cross-disciplinary project, combining naval architecture with logistics research to establish design recommendations and identify potential innovation for CO2 tankers, linked to the logistic patterns and operational prerequisites. The department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. M2 holds one of Sweden's most extensive simulator centre for navigation and propulsion of ships, as well as world class laboratories for experimental studies. The department also offers and contributes to bachelor and master programs in areas such as Shipping, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering to mention a few. In addition, professional education is performed on both a national and international level, with specific designed mission training for different social actors, within our ambition for a lifelong learning. The department continuously strives to establish a cooperation between academia, industry, and society, with a great focus on utilization. M2 is characterized by an international environment with employees and students from around the world, as well as outstanding research and world-class education. M2 consists of seven different divisions within the areas of engineering and maritime sciences, and one division of administration and support.

Information about the division
The division of Marine Technology conducts research and education centred primarily around the professional understanding and technical development of methods and models within the fields of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. The core research areas span ship design, marine structures, hydrodynamics, safety and reliability, and maritime operations Research activities are performed within both basic sciences to advance the understanding of the physics controlling the design and operation, as well as applied sciences in, e.g. simulation tools to support a designer, advance the regulations and provide models for ship operations. Another important challenge is how to derive reliable metocean parameters for practical applications, such as a ship's energy performance monitoring when sailing at sea. Safety and energy efficiency in ships are at the core of the research and education, and we work closely with different industry partners to ensure a high relevance and promote utilisation. The division is responsible for educating Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers within the international master's program Mobility Engineering at Chalmers.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as a PhD student are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The position also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to up to 20 per cent of working hours.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant field.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
