German studies are part of the Department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch, and German. The department has about 60 employees and over 1500 students per academic year. Teaching within the section of German studies is focused on the German language, German as a foreign language, and the culture and literature of the German-speaking countries. The main research areas are German linguistics and didactics, as well as German cultural and literary studies. Specific research areas include language and identity, text and discourse linguistics, political and internet-based communication, cultural learning, multilingualism in education, historical genre research, early modern literature, exile literature, urban literature, novel theory, collective identities and cultural memory, as well as literature and multilingualism.

Project description
The Department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch, and German announces 1–2 fully funded doctoral positions in German with a focus on German linguistics, cultural, or literary studies.

As a doctoral student at the Department of Slavic and Baltic Studies, Finnish, Dutch, and German, you have to opportunity to take part in the courses and activities offered by the Faculty of Humanities' doctoral school. It is distinguished by courses that promote multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary cooperation. Additionally, the doctoral school provides a valuable opportunity for you to expand your academic horizons and enrich your subject-specific knowledge through interaction with a diverse community of doctoral students from various disciplines and departments.

Qualification requirements
In order to meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meet the specific entry requirements, please see the general syllabus for doctoral studies in German. To obtain specific eligibility for admission to doctoral studies in German, it is required that the applicant has completed courses at an advanced level of at least 30 ECTS credits in the main field of German, including a thesis of at least 15 ECTS credits, with satisfactory results.

In addition, for specific eligibility, the applicant must have knowledge of English and either have or commit to promptly seek to acquire knowledge of Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian. Language proficiency must include the ability to read, speak, and write in these languages.

The eligibility requirements can also be met by those who acquired essentially equivalent competence within or outside the country. Corresponding assessment of the eligibility is prepared and decided at the department in accordance with local procedures.

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the doctoral studies. The selection is made on the basis of the following criteria (listed without any particular order of priority):

  • The applicant's documented subject knowledge relevant to the research area
  • The applicant's ability to express oneself verbally and in writing in German at a level necessary to complete the doctoral studies
  • The applicant's ability to analytical thinking, creativity, own initiative, and independence
  • The applicant's ability to cooperate
  • The relevance, originality, and feasibility of the research plan (see below)
  • The applicant's documented ability to complete tasks within the allotted timeframe
  • The available supervisory expertise.

As a basis for the assessment, previous studies and grades, the quality of independent work, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the applicant's written motivation for the application are used. In connection with the application, the applicant shall briefly account for his or her intended research area in a research plan. The account shall include the formulation of the problem(s) and an outline of the implementation of the research work. The plan is assessed with regard to relevance, originality, and feasibility within a given time frame (i.e., during a period equivalent to four years of full-time education).

Terms of employment
Only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed to a doctoral studentship.

The term of the initial contract may not exceed one year. The employment may be extended for a maximum of two years at a time. However, the total period of employment may not exceed the equivalent of four years of full-time study.

Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research, and administration corresponding to a maximum of 20 % of a full-time position.
