Offer Description

Luleå University of Technology is in strong growth with world-leading competence in several research areas. We shape the future through innovative education and ground-breaking research results, and based on the Arctic region, we create global social benefit. Our scientific and artistic research and education are conducted in close collaboration with international, national and regional companies, public actors and leading universities. Luleå University of Technology has a total turnover of SEK 1.9 billion per year. We currently have 1,840 employees and 17,670 students.

In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.

Division of Materials Science at Luleå University of Technology (LTU) invites highly motivated candidates with an interest to carry out research in Experimental Physics with a focus on materials synthesis and modeling for solar-to-thermal energy conversion for water desalination.

Researcher from “Experimental Physics” have ongoing research programs spanning broad research areas of advanced nanostructured materials (both experimental research and modeling).

In basic training, essentially two international training programs focusing on solid state physics and materials science are important for the department, the engineering program EEIGM and the master’s program AMASE.

This recruitment is connected to the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. More information about WISE: https://wise-materials.org

The WISE Graduate School, https://wise-materials.org/graduate-school/ which includes both PhD students and postdocs, provides important skills needed to achieve excellence in the interdisciplinary area of materials science for sustainability. Through an ambitious program with research visits, partner universities, and visiting lectures, the Graduate School actively supports forming a strong multi-disciplinary and international professional network between PhD students, postdocs, researchers, and industry. The WISE Graduate School thus offers a unique opportunity for early-stage researchers who are interested in world-class international research with industrial relevance.

Project description
We are looking for you who want to become a PhD student in experimental physics. You will belong to an established research team and work in the research project that focuses in solar-thermal energy conversion for water desalination.

In this project, we want to investigate a new class of solar selective absorbers (SSAs) based on low bandgap composite semiconductors with low heat transfer coefficient and use them in a demonstrator application for solar water desalination.

We shall complement the experiments with computational investigations, aiming at corroborating the theoretical results to the experimental data. We will use machine learning and data mining to design and find materials with the desired properties.

Research subject
The subject comprises experimental physics with an emphasis on material science research on micro and nano length scales, and that are closely and widely related to applications and applied research.

Duties
Working as a doctoral student is a great opportunity to self-define daily tasks and how they will be implemented. You will act and train yourself as a project manager combined with your own education and development. You will be trained in scientific work in the form of publishing scientific articles in journals and at national and international conferences. As a researcher, you have a neutral role in many contexts, which provides a fantastic opportunity to learn how to manage challenging development projects.

Qualifications
A successful candidate will have an MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Materials Engineering and related disciplines. Previous experience in one or more of the following areas: synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials, nanomaterials modeling, materials characterization, solar water desalination is desirable. You must have good knowledge in English, both spoken and written.
