In the coming years, multi-billion investments will be made in large projects in Northern Sweden to create a fossil-free society both nationally and globally. Luleå University of Technology is involved in several of these cutting-edge research projects and in the societal transformation that they entail. We offer a broad range of courses and study programmes to match the skills in demand. We hope that you will help us to build the sustainable companies and societies of the future.

The Division of Materials Science at Luleå University of Technology is looking for a PhD student with an interest to carry out research in Engineering Materials with a focus on materials synthesis and processing for ammonia storage and transportation as hydrogen carrier. The research subject Engineering Materials within the Division of Materials Science at Luleå University of Technology has on-going research programs spanning over broad research areas of metallic and ceramic materials (High temperature intermetallics, aerospace materials, high strength steels, porous ceramics and energy harvesting materials). The division is part of the Department of Engineering Sciences and Mathematics. The Department has several other research topics relevant to materials research, e.g., material mechanics, machine elements and solid mechanics.

Subject description
Engineering materials includes the field of material composition, structure, properties and production of materials – mainly metallic and ceramic – as well as application aspects

Project description
Your project Material Technologies for Ammonia Storage and Transportation as Hydrogen Carrier is part of the graduate school Center for Hydrogen Energy Systems Sweden (CH2ESS). CH2ESS is a research and knowledge initiative at Luleå University of Technology, in close collaboration with Swedish industry in the hydrogen area.

The project will design, synthesize and structure novel materials for safe chemical storage and transportation of hydrogen to point sources of industrial use. The project will integrate sorbents (alkaline earth metal halides-chemisorbents) and ultraporous materials catalysts (physisorbents) to create a highly adaptable user-centered storage system for the transportation of green ammonia as hydrogen carrier for on-site hydrogen production and industrial use. These new, safe, transportation technologies will radically improve the scalability, adaptability and cost-efficiency of using ammonia as hydrogen vector from renewable resources and they have the potential to transform existing large-scale ammonia-based production into a low-carbon (zero carbon), non-fossil-based, hydrogen centered economy. Simultaneously, this project will contribute to enhance the share of renewables in the energy infrastructure to meet 2050 EU target of carbon neutral energy infrastructure. The project requires specialized knowledge of design and synthesis of microporous adsorbents, tailoring of adsorptive properties, gas separation by pressure swing adsorption and storage of gases in porous materials.

Duties
Working as a doctoral student is a great opportunity to self-define daily tasks and how they will be implemented. You will act and train yourself as a project manager combined with your own education and development. Plus, you grow as a teacher. You will be part of the “Network of young scientists within Hyrdogen” within CH2ESS, and part of the Creaternity graduate school.

Qualifications
You must have an MSc in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics or Engineering. Previous experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable: Synthesis of porous materials, Metal organic framework synthesis, Gas separation, Structured adsorbents.
