Evaluation of protected areas and other conservation measures in an era of land use and climate change
Department of Ecology

At the Department of Ecology, we conduct research on populations, communities and ecosystems. We generate knowledge on how land use and climate affects animals, plants, nutrient cycling and greenhouse gas balance, and develop sustainable solutions for the future. The unit of landscape ecology is a growing group of researchers who use diverse data sources to study different aspects of biodiversity change, and how nature can best be protected, conserved and restored.

Research subject:

Biology with specialisation in ecology.

Description:

The PhD position will form part of a research project concerned with the effects of climate change and habitat loss on natural systems. As humans have become aware of their negative effects on biodiversity, there has been a strong focus creating protected areas such as nature reserves and national parks. There is now a goal to protect 30% of the world’s area by 2030, but is still more or less unknown how effective the existing protected area system is. The PhD student will use historical and modern data relating to climate, land use and species occurrences to evaluate how protected areas together with other conservation measures have affected trends of land-use change, reduced extinction risk and facilitated colonisation of expanding species. The position is based in Sweden, and will use data from both Sweden and Great Britain.

Qualifications:

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate who is excited to learn and who wants to generate new knowledge that will be extremely valuable for future biodiversity conservation. Applicants must have attained a masters or equivalent qualification within the subject of biology, ecology, geography, environmental science or related subject. Knowledge of, and interest in the field of biodiversity and ecology is essential. Relevant experience in ecological and geographic data analysis is a merit, as is competence in handling data in R or another coding environment. Focus will also be placed on personal attributes; because the candidate is going to work within a project with several partners in Sweden and the United Kingdom, it is important to be able to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing.
