PhD in digital propagation twin for integrated sensing and communication

Updated: 27 days ago
Deadline: 31 Mar 2024

Background of the research project
Join the frontier of innovation in 6G: the future of mobile network technology! A unique Dutch-driven alliance in collaboration with Ericsson and Chalmers, comprising 60 leading ICT businesses, mobile operators, semiconductor manufacturers, and research institutions, have united to spearhead the development of specific aspects of 6G. Join us as a PhD student in this prestigious Future Network Services (FNS) flagship project, where research and entrepreneurial pursuits converge.

Within this project, the aim is to improve joint communication and sensing by utilizing the digital twin concept. A digital twin of 5G and future 6G networks may be approximated in its simplest form by a radio propagation channel, together with transmit and receive units with their respective physical constraints. A digital twin includes realistic/identical deployment and movement of transceivers as in the real world. Considering mobile units move through an environment, the digital twin can aid with prior knowledge to allow for improved localization and mapping/sensing of/by these units. At the same time, this provides to opportunity to improve the propagation model used in the digital twin by detecting and identifying radio propagation paths/mechanisms that are missing in the simulation results of the digital twin.

Information about the division and the department
You will be part of the Communication Systems (CS) group  at Chalmers, which comprises 9 professors and a large number of PhD students and postdocs. The CS group is internationally known for its academic research in wireless systems, fiber-optical communications, coding, information theory, and machine learning. We provide an intellectually stimulating, but also flexible and family-friendly environment. You will have great freedom when, where, and how you will work. Our group is diverse and social, with members from many countries and backgrounds. We have an emphasis on collaboration and mutual support. CS is part of the Department of Electrical Engineering , where we value all our co-workers and we know that a variety of personalities and experiences makes the most creative workplaces. We therefore encourage applicants with any gender, background, and abilities.
