Licentiate position in forest modelling

The centre carries out research, teaching and dissemination of information on forest management in southern Sweden. The research is focused on subjects particularly relevant to southern Sweden, such as the silviculture of deciduous and mixed forests, alternatives to spruce, management of forests with extensive butt-rot, high quality production on fertile sites, damage caused by native and invasive forest pest and pathogens, and competition between ground vegetation and tree seedlings. The research is carried out in close co-operation with the forest industry and other stakeholders in society. Teaching: Courses are held in variety of forest-related topics for Swedish and international students at the bachelor and master level.

In this 2-year project the student will be develop his/her skills in forest modelling. The studies include models on stand and landscape level to assess the forest growth and development, especially with intersecting consequences from climate change and forest damaging agents. The student will get a research education in silviculture with training in forest growth & yield modelling and sustainable forest management. The PhD student will be included in our research team with focus on forest management using empirical data and mechanistic modelling. We do research on all types of forest management systems and a wide range of forestry use, including forest conservation management. Our team are responsible for the teaching in silviculture on two masters- and one bachelor program.

The applicant should have a M. Sc. degree in silviculture or related forest sciences, biostatistics or a related discipline but with main focus on understanding tree and stand growth and development. Other beneficial qualifications are experience of forestry analytics, using preferably R programming language and/or GIS softwares, and good communications skills with fluency in written English. Drivers license is a necessity for the work duties.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement.

Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
