The Faculty of Arts and Humanities , in collaboration with the Linnaeus University Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies , now announces five salaried doctoral student positions with a specialisation in global humanities, in any of the following disciplines: archaeology, history, the study of religions, and comparative, English, French, or German literature.

Linnaeus University has two main campuses, one in Växjö and one in Kalmar. The research school is located in Växjö, but PhD-students are expected to participate in activities at both campuses.

Form of employment and hours
48 months temporary employment, full time.

The employment as a doctoral student is limited according to Chapter 5, Section 7 of the Higher Education Ordinance . The total employment period may not exceed the equivalent of full-time third-cycle (postgraduate) studies for four years. However, besides their own studies, someone employed as a doctoral student may to a limited extent work with education, (artistic) research, and administration, in which case the period of employment will be extended proportionally. Such work may not exceed 20 per cent of full-time work.

The current (January 2022) starting salary for a doctoral student is SEK 28 850 per month (subject to tax).

Job description
Duties include third-cycle (postgraduate) studies up to a doctoral degree, corresponding to a maximum of four years of full-time studies in one of seven possible third-cycle education subjects: archaeology, history, the study of religions, comparative literature, English literature, French literature, or German literature. Third-cycle programmes include compulsory and elective courses of 60 credits (ECTS) and a doctoral thesis corresponding to 180 credits. As a doctoral student you will be part of the faculty’s new Doctoral Programme in Global Humanities . As such, you will play an important part in the faculty’s research environment, as well as at your home department. You will be expected to contribute actively by regularly attending seminars, workshops, research retreats, courses, and other activities organised by the programme and/or your home department, and to interact regularly with other doctoral students, researchers, and teachers at the faculty. You will be expected to spend most of your working hours at the Växjö campus of Linnaeus University, unless your research or other work requires otherwise (e.g., fieldwork or archival research).

Context of the position
The proposed doctoral projects must fall within the field of global humanities, as defined on the website for the faculty’s Doctoral Programme in Global Humanities . The programme is an international and inclusive research environment, and applicants of any nationality, based anywhere in the world at the time of the application deadline, are welcome to apply.

As a doctoral student, you will be employed by the department to which your subject belongs. Consequently, you will be expected to contribute to your department’s research environment and activities, in addition to those of the Doctoral Programme in Global Humanities. You may also be affiliated to a research centre or group at the faculty, such as the Linnaeus University Centre for Concurrences in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies , the Linnaeus University Centre for Intermedial and Multimodal Studies , the Centre for Applied Heritage , the UNESCO Chair on Heritage Futures , the Archaeothanatology Working Group , the Medieval Forum Linnaeus , or the Digital Humanities Project .

At least one of the five positions will be in history and the successful candidate will be a part of the National Graduate School of Historical Studies , which requires basic proficiency in Swedish. This requirement only pertains to this position. No knowledge of Swedish is required for the other four positions (which may be in any of the seven possible third-cycle education subjects, including history).

• Proficiency in English, corresponding to the general entry requirements for university studies in Sweden (at the bachelor’s level). For further information, see the website of the Swedish Council for Higher Education

AND one of the following:

• At least 120 credits of passed courses in archaeology or the equivalent, of which at least 30 credits must be at the second-cycle level, including an independent project of least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
• At least 120 credits of passed courses in comparative literature, English literature, French literature, or German literature, of which at least 30 credits must be at the second-cycle level, including an independent project of at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
• At least 120 credits of passed courses in history or the equivalent, of which at least 30 credits must be at the second-cycle level, including an independent project of at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad.
• At least 120 credits of passed courses in the study of religions or the history of religions or the equivalent, of which at least 30 credits must be at the second-cycle level, including an independent project of at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge acquired in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

AND, for one of the five positions, which will be in history and be part of the National Graduate School in Historical Studies:

• Ability to understand spoken and written academic Swedish (note that this requirement only pertains to one of the five positions; the other four positions (in any of the seven possible third-cycle subjects, including history, do not require proficiency in Swedish).
