Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Department of Plant Breeding

SLU Department of Plant Breeding performs research and education addressing global challenges affecting our livelihoods and the environment. The Plant breeding division works on putting traits into usable forms by understanding their diversity, genetics and their interaction with the surrounding environment with the aid of conventional and advanced breeding tools. We apply this knowledge for the genetic betterment of cultivars of economically important crops.

Combining RNAi-based spray technologies and biological control for sustainable control of filamentous plant pathogens
Description:

The transition to sustainable crop protection calls for replacing synthetic fungicides with non-chemical strategies to combat plant pathogenic fungi and oomycetes. In recent years we have developed cutting-edge methods of RNAi-based spray technologies and biological control. These approaches have shown great potential to combat plant disease strategies and are still under rapid development within our research group. This project aims to interweave these two research lines to optimize methods for controlling filamentous plant pathogens in integrated pest management strategies. Thus, you will have the unique opportunity to be involved in a project in close collaboration with researchers working on RNA biology, plant pathology, plant breeding and plant protection.

The position is placed at the department of plant breeding at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Alnarp. The project is conducted in collaboration with researchers at the department of forest mycology and plant pathology, SLU, Uppsala. You will have the possibility to develop new connections with many researchers and stakeholders through various seminars and events organized by SLU.

Qualifications:

For this position, the applicants must have a higher university degree (master of science) in biology, plant breeding, biotechnology, horticulture, or agronomy, emphasizing plant pathology, mycology, microbiology, molecular biology, plant breeding, and plant protection or equivalent. Documented laboratory work experience in molecular biology, plant pathology, small RNA studies and biological control is merit. The applicant should have the ability to work independently as well as in a team in a robust research environment. The candidate should have good communication skills (both oral and written) and a strong work ethic and be prepared to participate in teaching and supervision of master students.
