The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment.

We address important societal issues such as antibiotic resistance, cancer, brain diseases, environmental problems and climate change. In this way, we contribute to achieving the UN's global goals for sustainable development in the areas of good health and well-being, sustainable energy for all, sustainable cities and communities, and combating climate change.

The department is an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education, and contributes strongly to the University of Gothenburg's top ranking in life science.  We are located in central premises both on Campus Johanneberg and on Campus Medicinareberget in Gothenburg and the department has around 200 employees.

The department is responsible for postgraduate education in the subject area Natural Sciences with a focus on chemistry, biophysics, biology and educational science. In addition, the department hosts educational programs in molecular biology, genomics and systems biology, chemistry, organic chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry, as well as prescription education. The department collaborates with various societal actors such as schools, business and authorities. Many of the members of CMB are also part of the Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research (CARe) which is a network of researchers addressing this global crisis.

Anne Farewell’s group uses molecular genetics and high-throughput screening to study how bacterial cells respond to stress and more recently has focused on the mechanisms of the spread of antibiotic resistance between bacteria. In this project the role of pesticides as drivers of ABR evolution and transmission to human pathogens will be examined. Despite the widespread use of pesticides (a broad group of agents which act against insects, weeds, bacteria and other pathogens), the role of these agents in promoting antibiotic resistance (ABR) is largely unknown. This project will examine the effect of pesticides on ABR development through linkage or cross-resistance (e.g., shared efflux mechanisms) and their role as drivers of ABR spread between bacteria through promoting conjugation. We will suggest interventions in the form of changes to how pesticides and fertilizers (organic and inorganic) are used in agricultural practices to minimize this risk and promote sustainable farming.

The assignments of the student will include: high-throughput screening of growth and conjugation in the presence of pesticides, large data analysis, targeted studies of individual strains or genes thought to be important for antibiotic resistance or conjugation, and the review of relevant literature.

The recruited PhD student will participate in seminars and internal group meetings, and in addition interact with other research groups in the department, CARe or abroad.

Additionally, the student is expected to acquire 60 hp through PhD level courses, some of which are mandatory, and to help with the teaching of laboratory exercises that are part of undergraduate courses. Most work-related activities will be carried out in English.

Education at third-cycle level comprises four years of full-time study, and leads to a doctoral degree.    

As part of your employment as a doctoral student, you may have departmental duties corresponding to up to 20 % of full-time employment, distributed throughout your study period. Departmental duties usually consist of teaching at first- and second-cycle levels, but may also include research and administration.  

Education at third-cycle level requires general eligibility and, where appropriate, specific eligibility as set out in the general syllabus for the subject.  

The general eligibility requirements for education at third-cycle level are:    

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

*A suitable educational background which should comprise one or more of the following areas: molecular biology, microbiology, synthetic biology, genomics, bioinformatics, and high throughput molecular techniques including robotics.

*Prior experience from experimental and in silico work in any of the above areas is advantageous as is experience with bacterial molecular genetics. Experience with large data sets or statistical programming languages (e.g., R or SPSS) is an advantage.

*High motivation to pursue doctoral studies and ability to independently plan and organize own experiments.

*Good ability to analyse and communicate scientific results, and to present both in oral and written form in English.

*Interest in and ability to work collaboratively within the  lab group.

Once you have been admitted for education at third-cycle level, you will be employed as a doctoral student at the University of Gothenburg.   

The provisions for employment as a doctoral student can be found in ordinance SFS 1993:100.    

Initial employment as a doctoral student may apply for a maximum of one year, and may be renewed by a maximum of two years at a time.  

 A doctoral student may be employed as a doctoral student for a maximum of eight years, but the total period of employment may not be longer than the equivalent of full-time education at third-cycle level for four years.   

The University applies a local agreement on salaries for doctoral students.
