KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering universities, as well as a key centre of intellectual talent and innovation. We are Sweden’s largest technical research and learning institution and home to students, researchers and faculty from around the world. Our research and education covers a wide area including natural sciences and all branches of engineering, as well as architecture, industrial management, urban planning, history and philosophy.
Third-cycle subject: Physics / Optics and Photonics
The project shall develop applied research in the field of integrated optics, with the aim of demonstrating compact and low-noise on-chip components for the effective manipulation of quantum mechanical properties of light. It shall investigate novel hybrid nanophotonic circuits and architectures for enhanced quantum optical functionalities with a significant joint effort on the technology side, to bridge current activities on superconducting, ferroelectric and photonic nanowires. The goal is to establish a common nanophotonic platform and ultimately achieve integration of single photon generation, entanglement, detection, electro-optic switching and frequency-conversion on a single chip.
The project will be conducted at the Quantum and Bio-Photonics Unit at the Department of Applied Physics, in a dynamic and creative group of about 30 members, working in an international and collaborative atmosphere. We perform both curiosity-driven and applied research, primarily experimental and often multi-disciplinary. We enjoy state of the art laboratories for quantum optics and nanotechnology, integrated nonlinear photonics, biomolecular imaging and spectroscopy. The work shall involve advanced nanofabrication, integrated photonic circuit design, manufacturing and testing of integrated quantum circuits.
The PhD student position is a full-time employment for four years with a possibility of maximum up to five years. Up to 20% department duties may be included in the employment.
What we offer
To be admitted to postgraduate education (Chapter 7, 39 § högskoleförordningen), the applicant must have basic eligibility in accordance with either of the following:
- passed a degree at advanced level,
- completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 higher education credits at advanced level, or
- posses equivalent knowledge acquired by other means, within or outside Sweden.
