Örebro University and the School of Science and Technology are looking for a doctoral student for the doctoral programme in computer science, concluding with a doctoral degree.
Start date: autumn 2021.
The offered position is part of the new European research and innovation project DARKO, to be coordinated by Örebro University.
The topic for this position is aligned with contemporary research topics in mapping and localisation for autonomous mobile robots. Specifically, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research on (1) representing and using maps of dynamics for ”flow-aware” robots that can learn, e.g., how people tend to move, and plan their motions to move safely and efficiently together with people; and (2) reliability-aware mapping and safe localisation, enabling robots to better self-monitor the quality of their mapping and localisation systems.
Research in this project will be performed in close interaction with other doctoral students and senior researchers at Örebro University, and will also involve substantial collaboration with our international and national research partners from academia and industry.
The successful candidate is autonomous, shows strong and independent problem solving and critical analytical abilities. Furthermore, the candidate has the ability to co-operate and possesses personal maturity. Fluent spoken and written command of English is essential, while knowledge of Swedish is not necessary. Excellent programming skills are also required, as in a keen interest in mathematics, computer science, and robotics. Prior knowledge in probabilistic methods is beneficial. Experience with robotic sensing and control, machine learning, and relevant software frameworks are other valuable merits.
Supervision: The doctoral student will be supervised by Dr Martin Magnusson and Professor Achim J Lilienthal.
The programme and the doctoral studentship
The position is with the Centre for Applied Autonomous Sensor Systems (AASS) at Örebro University and is funded through the DARKO research and innovation project (Dynamic Agile Production Robots That Learn and Optimize Knowledge and Operation). The doctoral student will belong to the MRO (Mobile Robotics and Olfaction) lab at AASS. The AASS centre (http://www.oru.se/aass) is a strong research environment and internationally known for its expertise within artificial intelligence and robotics. Nationally, the research in AI and Robotics at Örebro is leading, and this is evidenced by the University’s involvement in a number of high profile initiatives related to AI (see oru.se/ai). The doctoral programme consists of courses and an independent research project that you will present in a doctoral thesis. The programme concludes with a doctoral degree and comprises 240 credits, which corresponds to four years of full-time study.

The place on the programme is linked to a full-time doctoral studentship for the duration of the study programme. The initial salary for a doctoral studentship is SEK 28 100 per month.
The doctoral studentship is a tailored form of employment for students enrolled on a doctoral programme. It guarantees employment for the duration of the doctoral programme (given that the studies progress).
Entry requirements and selection
For admission to doctoral studies, applicants are required to meet both general entry requirements and specific entry requirements. In addition, applicants must be considered in other respects to have the ability required to benefit from the programme. For a full account of the entry requirements, refer to the admissions regulations as well as to annex 2 to the general syllabus for computer science.
Applicants meet the specific entry requirements for doctoral studies in computer science if they have been awarded a Degree of Master of Science in Engineering or a one-year Master’s degree from a programme within the subject field or related subjects, or if they have received a passing grade of at least 120 credits, including an independent project on the second cycle, in a main field of study of relevance to the computer science field. A person who has acquired substantially corresponding knowledge, in Sweden or abroad, also meets the specific entry requirements.
