Doctoral (PhD) student position in work environment toxicology

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The successful candidate will join a research group focusing on identification, assessment and management of hazardous substances in the workplace. To address our reserach aims we work with a variety of methods and data sources, ranging from document studies, questionnaire and registry data to field work and laboratory in vitro studies.

We are a dynamic, collaborative, and supportive team at the unit of Integrative Toxicology within the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM), an interdisciplinary research department at Karolinska Institutet. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, pharmacology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health.

The PhD student will work in a project concerning health effects from occupational use of cleaning and disinfection agents. The candidate is expected to combine several sources of data and methods to map out risks for skin- and respiratory effects and also connect toxicological knowledge to prevention through regulatory measures and supply chain information. Particular focus will be on skin barrier damage and how that may result in adverse effects on skin as well as increase the risk of allergen exposure. The PhD student will also have the opportunity to take part in workplace measurements of inhalation and skin exposures.

Aside from the practical research work, the studies also include actively participating in unit and department activities, attending seminars, courses, and conferences. The PhD student will under supervision, and with time more independently, plan and execute the sub-studies of the PhD project, analyse data, interpret, and present the results as well as write scientific articles.

- Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

(A) and (B)can only be certified by the documentation requirement for doctoral education .

The PhD student is expected to analyse questionnaire data and perform diffusion cell experiments on skin permeation and chemical analyses The ideal candidate has an education within toxicology or similar and documented experience from chemical analysis like ICP-MS, LC-MS, and in vitro studies using diffusion cells. A driver’s licence is required. Other factors that will be given high weight are: English language and communication skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) as well as motivation to pursue a PhD, independence and ability to collaborate. Applicants are preferred to be available to start the PhD position as soon as possible.

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
