Doctoral (PhD) student position in Alzheimer research

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The PhD position will be in Lars Tjernbergs group at the Division of Neurogeriatrics, Department NVS, BioClinicum, Solna. Our main goals are to find novel biomarkers for Alzheimer disease (AD) and understand the pathogenesis of the disease. We have discovered a glycan biomarker for AD that we aim to evaluate in different patient groups. We collaborate with several research groups nationally and internationally as well as with actors in the health care, enabling testing of our findings in a clinical setting. Moreover, we study pathogenic mechanisms related to AD in primary neurons and AD mouse models. To this end, we use various biochemical, cell biological and microscopic techniques, including so called super-resolution microscopy.

The research project is focused on validating and discovering glycan biomarkers for AD in different cohorts by using multi-well plate assays and mass spectrometric techniques. Moreover, the project involves elucidating the links between protein glycosylation and AD pathogenesis in cellular models.

Your role is to participate in all parts of the PhD project; do literature searches, plan studies, manage data, do statistical analyses and write manuscripts. You will also participate in relevant courses, seminars and present your results at international conferences. You will be greatly supported by a group of supervisors with expertise in Alzheimer's disease, cell biology, biochemistry and analytical methods.

We are looking for a highly motivated person with an interest in neurodegenerative disorders, in particular Alzheimer disease. You should have an education in medicine, biomedicine, cell biology, biochemistry or similar. Experience from laboratory work is a requirement.

It is meritorious to have:

Experience in research on biomarkers and neurodegenerative disorders

Experience in using multiwell-plate assays and statistical analysis of patient datasets

Experience in clinical work and chart review

Experience in statistical computing software and programming language such as R

Experience in culturing of primary neurons

Experience in confocal microscopy

We value a strong collaborative attitude, good social skills and good skills in writing and communication. The working language is English, but good skills in Swedish is an advantage.

The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
