We seek outstanding and highly?talented applicants with a passion for a research career in life sciences. Applicants should hold a Master s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Physics, Biomedicine or related disciplines. An excellent academic record to be competitive in PhD fellowship applications will be important. Fluency in English will also be important. The successful applicant will engage in high?quality research leading to a PhD degree from the Molecular Biology and Biomedicine PhD program at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU).
The laboratory offers an unique opportunity to be trained in cryo?EM and enjoys in house access to state-of-the-art electron microscopy instrumentation through the Basque Resource for Electron Microscopy (BREM). BREM houses a ThermoFisher Krios G4 cryo-electron microscope, equipped with a phase plate and Gatan´s BioContinuum Imaging Filter and K3 direct electron detector. In addition, the facility offers technical expertise in specimen preparation, data collection and processing. OFFER – Predoctoral position in cryo-EM
Publication date: November 19, 2021
Description of the project and position offered
A predoctoral position is immediately available in the structural biology of disease mechanisms laboratory led by Ikerbasque Research professor Iban Ubarretxena (https://www.ikerbasque.net/es/iban-ubarretxena-belandia ) at Instituto Biofisika in Bilbao, Spain (www.biofisika.org ). We employ high-resolution cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), in combination with functional experiments, to uncover the structure and mechanism of action of macromolecular protein complexes involved in human disease. The goal of our research is to open new therapeutic avenues by understanding the role of these protein complexes in pathogenesis. For recent publications from the laboratory see:
Nat Struct Mol Biol. 2020 10:913; Nature Commun. 2020 10:2699; Nature Struct. Mol. Biol. 2019 26:955, Cell Res. 2019 29:313. The successful applicant will be able to participate in international multidisciplinary projects and have the opportunity for short stays in partner international research institutions.
