POSTDOCTORAL POSITION – TEXTURIZED AND LUBRICATED MACHINE ELEMENT CONTACT MODELLING

Updated: almost 3 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 31 Aug 2021

During the last decade, the Structural Mechanics & Design (DME) and the Surface Technologies (LTS) research groups from the Faculty of engineering of Mondragon Unibertsitatea have developed an intensive activity, both in the scientific and industrial community: published more than 200 scientific contributions in journals and conferences while carrying out more than 20 industrial research projects/year. The candidate will join a research team formed by 15 reasearchers, 3 technicians, 10 PhD candidates and more than 20 graduate and undergraduate research assistants. Some of the research activities that the postdoc candidate will join are:
• Machine elements (bearings, gears, ball screws, CVT, spline couplings)
• EHL lubrication (rheology, micro-hydrodynamics)
• Advanced numerical modelling (FSI, X-FEM)
• Surface metrology
• Laser texturing The postdoctoral position will focus on the development of nature inspired micro/nano-textured surfaces to improve lubricated contact in machine elements. Some of the challenges are:
• Modelling of EHL and traction in texturized surfaces
• Experimental development of texturized surfaces using femtosecond laser texturing machine
• Experimental traction measurements using ball-on-disc and twin-disc configurations
• Extrapolation of results to machine elements and experimental validation
The candidate will also advise master and doctoral students working in the topic. The duration of the project is two academic years with the possibility of extending it according to the funding acquired.
