PhD student for Water Resources Planning and Management Research Group

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 22 Oct 2022

Background

We are looking for candidates interested in pursuing a doctoral thesis in the Water Resources Planning and Management Research Group led by Dr. Javier Senent-Aparicio at Catholic University of Murcia (UCAM), under a fully funded FPI contract (4 years) from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (MICINN).

Tasks

The selected candidate will participate in the research project "Enhancement of hydrological modelling at catchment scale through the integrated use of physically based models and artificial intelligence techniques” with the aim of integrating novel physically-based models and machine learning techniques to simulate surface and groundwater hydrological processes and their interactions in the Upper Tagus River basin, serving afterwards for environmental flows evaluation and for streamflow forecasting related to water transfer purposes. With this objective, the candidate will carry out research work focused on (1) simulating the hydrology in the Upper Tagus River basin using cutting-edge modelling approaches based on physics; (2) evaluating the potential of Machine Learning methods to solve several aspects of the hydrology in complex hydrological systems and (3) assessing the strengths of integrating physically based models and machine learning techniques to complex hydrological applications. In addition, the researcher is expected to participate in national and international conferences and courses, where they will have the opportunity to share their results and expand their knowledge.
