PhD position in neuroengineering and machine learning in biological neuronal networks

The University of Barcelona offers a 3-year PhD position in a multidisciplinary European project that will study machine learning in engineered induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cultures. The project aims, firstly, to develop and train neuronal circuits in vitro to, secondly, demonstrate their capacity to carry out ‘machine learning’ tasks, such as pattern recognition or data classification. The project is framed within the Horizon 2020 Future and Emerging Technologies programme, and is carried out within a Consortium that includes Aston University, Loughborough University, CNRS, Technion Israel and the company 3Brain. The research in the University of Barcelona node will be carried out at the interface between the faculties of Physics and Medicine. The PhD student will carry out multidisciplinary tasks. He/she will set-up the neuronal cultures derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells and evaluate neuronal activity using calcium imaging and multi-electrode arrays. The student will also participate in the analysis and interpretation of the results obtained using bioinformatic tools. Research will be carried at the University of Barcelona. Periodic meetings of the entire Consortium as well as short stays in other laboratories are to be expected.
