OFFER DESCRIPTION
The Instruments and Systems Integration group of the Solar Energy Institute (Universidad Politécnica de Madrid) is looking for a highly motivated engineer or physicist to work in the development of low-cost, high-efficiency photovoltaic systems based on advanced optical architectures and micro-concentrator solar cells. This research line is supported by several national and European public-funded projects, in collaboration with other European research centers and the industry. Recent relevant results from our group can be found here .
The main objective is to design, model and prototype novel micro-concentrator optics that can be manufactured using low-cost continuous manufacturing technologies (e.g. roll-to-plate UV imprint lithography) and can still achieve a high performance, eventually leading to solar panels with the lowest possible carbon footprint and cost of electricity.

Additional Information
Benefits
- The contract is offered for a period of four years (based on annual renewal), with full-time dedication.
- Remuneration similar to competitive Spanish national grants (FPI, FPU...).
- Our institute promotes flexible work-life balance measures.
Eligibility criteria
Candidates are selected exclusively on merit and potential on the basis of submitted application material. No restrictions of persons with disabilities, citizenship or gender apply.
Women candidates are encouraged to apply for this position. Our institute promotes flexible work-life balance measures.
Selection process
All candidates are informed about the selection process through email.
Candidates may be asked to hold remote web meetings with the selection committee during the last stage of the process.
Additional comments
Team
Our group of 10 researchers and technicians was founded by Prof. Gabriel Sala, awarded with the Becquerel prize of the European Commission for his pioneering work in the development of concentrator photovoltaic (CPV) systems. Our work in CPV continues to be internationally recognized.
We are integrated, along with four other PV research groups, in the Instituto de Energía Solar (Solar Energy Institute) of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Madrid Technical University), which is located on the Ciudad Universitaria campus, near Madrid center.
Our work
Our objective as a research group is to promote low-cost, low-carbon solar electricity through the development of high-efficiency systems leveraging optical concentrator architectures (concentrator photovoltaics, CPV).
Our main lines of research are:
- Novel concentrator architectures for CPV systems, notably microconcentrators
- Low cost fabrication methods for high-efficiency concentrator optics
- Development of optical and electrical instrumentation and characterization methods for photovoltaic systems
- Other emerging applications like vehicle-integrated or bulding-applied photovoltaics (VIPV and BAPV)
Much of the group’s activity is focused on the development of methods, instruments, and equipment for the measurement and characterization, both in laboratory and in real operation, the full range of CPV devices and components, from single cells all the way to large solar plants. Another cornerstone of our activities revolves around developing concepts, designs, and prototypes for CPV systems, some of which have been taken to the demonstration plant level
Our recent work has been funded through large EU-funded projects like Hiperion , GRECO , CPV-Match , Ecosole , Sophia and NGCPV where we developed novel CPV concepts and instrumentation for the lab and the production line.
