Offer Description

IRTA is currently seeking an enthusiastic and motivated PhD candidate to join the Animal Welfare Program . We invite applications from ambitious candidates with relevant research experience and passion to conduct research and innovation activities on the activities on the DEVELOPMENT OF NEW STRATEGIES TO DO SUSTAINABLE A HERD OF SHEEP AND GOATS IN SILVOPASTURE REGIMEN IN THE PYRENEES.

The PhD candidate will have:

 

- To be responsible of taking data (behavioral, nutritional and reproductive), samples (fecal, urine, milk) and monitor animal’s performance of a new herd of sheep (composed by 100 animals from one breed and 100 from another) reared for meat production and 40 goats reared for milk Production.

- To be responsible of taking data of collars used for virtual fences and to assess the capacity of training of the animals

- To be responsible of taking data on the use of space of the animals along the year.

-Scientific writing

-Collaboration in other tasks of the project ovihuec.dat, that includes recompilation of traditional practices from other farmers, management of a herd with guard dogs and a shepherd, effect of the herd on the risks of fires, effect of the herd on the biodiversity and health of the environment, including the soil and strategies to give an added value to the meat and milk produced by the studied herd.

Skills/Qualifications

-Candidates must hold one of the following degrees:

A) A bachelor’s degree in animal science, biology, veterinary medicine, agronomy, animal production or Environmental Science. If the bachelor’s degree is a 4-year degree, then the Catalan PhD system requires also to be in position described in b.

B) To be in a position to access a doctoral programme according to the requirements of Catalan universities, i.e. accrediting between 60 and 120 ECTS credits at the official university master’s degree level or equivalent.

-Not to have a previous PhD degree.


Specific Requirements

-Availability to travel and work in the Val d’Aran during at least the two first years of the thesis.

-Drive license and car.

     Job location: Vilamos (La Val d’Aran) - Girona

    Full-time position (37.5 h/week)

   Terms of appointment: The duration of the PhD Candidate contract will be for one year, extendible by yearly periods to a maximum of four (4) years.

  •  Salary: The financial remuneration for the PhD Student contract will be €1.329, 92/gross per month (€18.618’88/gross per annum) and for the first and second years. For this third year, it will be €1.424’91/gross per month (€19.948,74/gross per annum) and for the fourth year it will be €1.781,14/gross per month (€24.935,96/gross per annum)which will be subject to the corresponding withholdings, pursuant to prevailing regulations, and to the collective employment agreement of IRTA. IRTA will also pay the fees of the doctoral school when receiving the enrolment. (1)

Selection Committee:
