Job position

ERC-Funded PhD position in Zooarchaeology and fish ecology in South America.

The project TRADITION (Long-term coastal adaptation, food security and poverty alleviation in Latin America) funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 817911) is appointing a motivated PhD to conduct zooarchaeological, stable isotopes and proteomic analysis on fish remains from coastal archaeological sites in subtropical and tropical South America. TRADITION aims to understand the long-term trajectory of human interaction with coastal resources and its legacy to present day small-scale fisheries in Latin America.

The successful applicant will work prevalently on fish remains from a range of Pre-Columbian and Colonial (historical) archaeological sites of the Atlantic Forest coast of Brazil.

She/he will apply zooarchaeological analysis for quantitative, taxonomic and taphonomic determinations. During the first year the applicant will spend few months in Brazilian institutions analysing fish remains. In Spain (UAB) she/he will liaise with members of the team (PI, postdocs and the senior technician) for planning and executing biomolecular analysis on fish and mammal bone remains, including stable carbon, nitrogen and sulphur isotopic analysis for dietary and ecological reconstructions, and peptide mass fingerprinting of collagen (ZooMS) for taxonomic determinations. We welcome applicants with knowledge on fish ecology and biology, notably in tropical and subtropical coastal areas. Applicants with experience/training in statistical and geospatial analysis are welcome (R packages, GIS).

The successful applicant will work in the multi-disciplinary research project TRADITION, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme Consolidator Grant. The PhD will work closely with the PI (Dr. Andre Colonese), the project team (postdocs and senior technician), and Brazilian partners of the project to prepare work for dissemination, including presenting research findings internally and externally at seminars, workshops and conferences, and assisting in writing articles, papers, reports, etc. for publication. The PhD will possibly undertake some teaching and support the training of undergraduate and master students.
