Offer Description

PhD research will focus on the development of advanced battery management systems (BMS). The basis for the development of models for BMS will be the experimental characterisation of Li-ion batteries, based on which the models will be validated (EC - Horizon Europe (HORIZON-CL5-2022-D2-01-09): NEXTBMS - NEXT-generation physics and data-based Battery Management Systems for optimised battery utilization; EC - Horizon Europe (HORIZON-CL5-2023-D5-01-02): InnoBMS - Situationally aware innovative battery management system for next generation vehicles). The goal is development of a computationally efficient electrochemical model of the Li-ion battery that will run on the microcontroller unit of the BMS at the selected refresh rate. The model will enable new ways of virtually observing various states of the battery during operation, such as the degradation phenomenon of the deposition of metallic Li on the surface of the active anode material during fast charging, which can permanently damage the battery.

If you are interested in the development of advanced systems for the control and management of the batteries based on physics-based models of transport and electrochemical phenomena inside cells, with the aim of improving battery safety and lifetime, as well as embedded programming on microcontrollers and their interconnection and communication with other components, we invite you to become part of our young and interdisciplinary team. We offer you the opportunity to work in the latest and most advanced research areas contributing to the digital and energy transformation of the European Union.

The work includes:

  • development of simulation models in numerical environments,
  • the management of individual tasks in international projects,
  • organising work and distributing tasks to colleagues,
  • participating in international meetings as part of projects,
  • preparation of reports.
