Offer Description
Assessment of the effectiveness of alternative measures applied to the safe drain of torrential precipitation from a model urbanized basin
Supervisor: Ing. Yvetta Velísková, PhD.
Workplace: Ústav hydrológie SAV, v. v. i. / Institute of Hydrology SAS
Field of study: Agriculture and Landscaping
Study program: Landscape Engineering
Form of study: full-time / part-time
Theses:
Torrential rainfall, which is becoming a reality more and more frequently as a result of ongoing climate change, causes major problems, especially in built-up residential areas. On the other hand, in a period of long lack of precipitation, the biota of this type of territory suffers from a lack of water. The content of the dissertation will be the assessment and quantification of the effectiveness of various variants of measures, which should, on the one hand, enable the safe transfer of an excessive amount of water in the limited space of the built-up area, but on the other hand, enable the maximum possible retention of water in such an area. The study will be conducted on a fictitious model territory, so that it is possible to clearly assess the effects of the proposed partial measures and their mutual combinations in a uniform environment. A prerequisite for the successful achievement of the goals is a thorough research of the current state of knowledge of the issue, possible measures in the field of grey or green infrastructure, theoretical analysis of possible methodological procedures, numerical simulation of runoff, as well as the application of statistical analysis methods.
Rationale:
Urbanization and expansion of settlements at the expense of the natural landscape causes fundamental changes in the outflow regime from the territory. An increase in total runoff volumes, an acceleration of the runoff process, a reduction in natural infiltration, and thus also a reduction in the possibilities of water accumulation and gradual evaporation causes an increase in the maximum flow rates in watercourses flowing through the urbanized area, but also an overload of the sewage network draining rainwater. The challenge is to return to, or at least go closer to the natural hydrological regime even in an urbanized country. Protection against floods has priority, but it must preferably be implemented in combination with revitalization and adaptation measures. However, the exact quantification of the effectiveness of individual alternative measures has not yet been done. Partial completion of this knowledge gap will be the content of this work.
Financial coverage:
Institute of Hydrology SAS owns instrumentation for field experiments, as well as software equipment for numerical modelling. The actual realization of the dissertation will be supported by the VEGA project entitled „Optimization of adaptation measures for extreme torrential rainfall in urbanized catchments“ (2024 – 2027).
Posúdenie účinnosti opatrení aplikovaných na bezpečné odvedenie prívalovej zrážky z modelového urbanizovaného povodia
Školiteľ: Ing. Yvetta Velísková, PhD.
Pracovisko: Ústav hydrológie SAV, v. v. i.
Študijný odbor: Poľnohospodárstvo a krajinárstvo
