Offer Description
Strategies and Principles of Design, Development and Restoration of Botanical Gardens in Landscape Architecture
Supervisor: doc. Ing. Attila Tóth, PhD.
Workplace: Institute of Landscape Architecture, FHLE SUA Nitra
Field of study: Agriculture and Landscape
Study program: Landscape Architecture
Form of study: External
Theses:
Botanical gardens are important institutional green spaces within the urban green infrastructure. They are public educational, scientific, research, and cultural institutions with the mission to collect, develop and maintain collections of plants in specialised landscape architectural compositions. Botanical gardens play a significant role in providing a wide range of ecosystem services and benefits. They have a positive effect on the local microclimate, contribute to a sustainable management of rainwater and significantly enhance biodiversity in settlements. The requirements for the presentation of living collections have been dynamically developing and changing since the foundation of the first botanical gardens, which significantly affects the processes of planning, design, implementation, management, maintenance, and revitalisation. These processes are also influenced by contemporary environmental challenges, the professional focus and specialisation of a botanical garden, its program and form of presentation of collections, the demands of the professional public, society, and the local community, as well as contemporary innovative technologies. It is therefore necessary to respond to these dynamic changes through landscape architecture, to adapt and innovate collections and exhibitions, their form, morphology, compositional, and aesthetic properties, and values. The dissertation research will focus on processes and principles of planning, landscape-architectural design, restoration, establishment, and management of botanical gardens. The subject of research will include historical development, legacy, and cultural heritage of botanical gardens, as well as contemporary innovative approaches to planning, design, and revitalisation of botanical gardens in an international context. The aim of the dissertation research will be to identify and evaluate methodological approaches and landscape-architectural solutions for planning, design, and restoration, using the example of selected model botanical gardens, which reflect contemporary requirements and trends in landscape architecture, as well as research, educational, environmental, social, and economic requirements, possibilities, and limits. The assessed parameters will include landscape-architectural solutions, approaches to plant collection and exhibition design, as well as ecosystem services and benefits provided by botanical gardens. The identified and mapped principles will be tested and verified through Research by Design on a selected botanical garden in Slovakia.
Rationale:
Planning, design, and restoration of botanical gardens is a highly specific and currently insufficiently scientifically elaborated issue in landscape architecture. This is an extremely complex interdisciplinary issue coordinated by landscape architects, in cooperation with other professionals and disciplines, especially botanists and ecologists. From the point of view of science, this research is well justified, especially in the conditions of Slovakia, with the aim of expanding the current state of knowledge and theory in landscape architecture. From the point of view of practice, this research is essential for the development of a scientific research and methodological basis for an informed and evidence-based design for solving current challenges, such as the conversion of institutional to semi-public spaces, adaptation to climate change, active biodiversity enhancement in urban environments biodiversity in settlements, sustainable management of rainwater and challenges.

Stratégie a princípy tvorby, rozvoja a obnovy botanických záhrad v krajinnej architektúre
Školiteľ: doc. Ing. Attila Tóth, PhD.
Pracovisko: Ústav krajinnej architektúry, FZKI SPU v Nitre
Študijný odbor: Poľnohospodárstvo a krajinárstvo
Študijný program: krajinná a záhradná architektúra
Jedná sa o mimoriadne náročnú interdisciplinárnu problematiku, ktorú koordinuje krajinný architekt, v súčinnosti s inými odbornými a vedeckými disciplínami, najmä botanikmi a ekológmi.
