Project Summary:

Recent dynamics of the marshes and tidal flats of the Tagus Estuary and Ria de Aveiro: erosion and impact on contaminant flows

The Tagus estuaries and Ria de Aveiro have a long history of occupation with strong impacts on the riverbanks and on the dynamics and quality of its waters. Industrial activity was a very important, especially in the second half of the 20th century, contributing to high levels of contamination, especially by heavy metals. the marshes and tidal shallows are among the estuarine units that accumulated the most contaminants during this period, still finding concentrations far above the levels tolerable by living organisms. With the rise in sea level and the changing economic activities and dynamics in the use of the estuary, there have been verified significant changes in the salt marshes and tidal shallows, which are still not well characterized. In particular, the details of the erosion rates and impacts on contaminant flows from deposits sediments, for the waters of the estuary in the last decades, nor its future behavior. This scholarship will aim to characterize the changes on the fronts of salt marshes and tidal flats in the Tagus Estuary and Ria de Aveiro, using historical aerial photographs, digital orthophotomaps, satellite images and drone aerial surveys. Erosion rates and of satisfaction in recent decades. Sampling data from contaminants collected in recent years, as well as new samples in key sites, to calculate the evolution of contaminant flows along the time. Modeling of the shoreline evolution will also be applied, in order to identify areas with the greatest potential for releasing contaminants, providing guidelines for the application of measures to mitigate the their potential impact.

Work objectives:

The work plan of the scholarship holder to be hired is as follows:

1 – Analysis of satellite images, orthophotomaps, historical aerial photography and aerial surveys with drone, with the objective of mapping the evolution of Marshes and tidal flats in selected sectors of the Tagus Estuary and Ria de Aveiro.

2 – Preparation of a spatial database of concentrations of contaminants from the Tagus Estuary and Ria de Aveiro.

3 – Determining the rates of change in the margins of salt marshes and shallows tide, with quantification of impacts for the flow of contaminants.

4 - Preparation of the Master's dissertation and an article based on the analysis of the results from points 1 to 3.

5 - Collaboration in EARTHLAB management tasks.
