Research Studentships (Master or Integrated Master students)

Applications are open for two Research Studentships, within the framework of project PTDC/ECI-EGC/1086/2021, associated to project CALCITE - Fixation mechanisms and durability of biocementation treatment of soils. Application to a real slope to prevent ravine development, financed by national funds through FCT/PIDDAC

Workplan: The work predicted includes participating a case-study where a sandy soil slope was treated by biocementation against ravine formation, and perform laboratorial tests to study the durability of this treatment. It presupposes the writing of a MSc thesis and a scientific paper in English to be submitted to an international conference.

Duration: for each one of the research fellowships, duration of 3 months eventually renewable until 5 months, expected to begin in March 2024.

Benefits

Monthly maintenance allowance: According to the values for Research Fellowships awarded by FCT in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_2023.pdf ), the amount of the monthly maintenance allowance is €930.98, being the payment method an option of the Fellow by Wire Transfer/Check.


Eligibility criteria

Admission Requirements: Have bachelor degree in Civil Engineering and be enrolled at one course to get a Master degree in Civil Engineering.


Selection process

Selection methods: The selection methods will be through curriculum evaluation (100%) carried out according to the following components: final classification of the Bachelor (30%), motivation letter where past experience on experimental work and on Geotechnics must be explained (20%), average grades in the units of Geotechnics from bachelor and master degrees, such as Soil Mechanics, Geotechnical Structures I and II, and Characterization and Observation in Geotechnics, or equivalent (20%) and the availability of the student to write his/her Master thesis within the project (30%). If an interview is carried out, in the event of a tiebreaker, the weighting will be 70% for the curriculum evaluation and 30% for the interview. If none of the candidates have the appropriate profile, the scholarship will not be awarded.

Composition of the selection Jury: Professors Rafaela Cardoso, Fernando Simões and Rui Carrilho Gomes.

Announcement/ notification of the results: The final evaluation results will be communicated to all applicants by email.

Deadlines and procedures of complaint and appeal . A complaint may be lodged from the final decision within 15 working days, or an appeal to the Executive Board of IST-ID within 30 working days, both counted from the respective notification
