Workplan: Stability of quantum liquid phases against environment-induced dissipation

There is no such thing as an isolated quantum system in nature. Given a system of interest be it a quantum computer based on superconducting qubits, atoms in an optical trap or a solid state magnet in a cryostat it is always coupled, no matter how weakly, to external degrees of freedom that form an environment or bath. Generically the environment brings about dissipation often thermalizing the system while also causing it to lose some degree of quantum coherence. This is a much-studied topic especially for elementary quantum systems coupled to a quantum environment.

This project is about the effects of quantum baths on many-body systems. Often it is reasonable to assume that the primary effect of the bath is to bring the system to some finite temperature. However, sometimes this assumption is incorrect. A recent case is the famous spin one-half Heisenberg chain. When isolated, the ground state of this model is quantum disordered and the elementary excitations form a continuum of arbitrarily low energy states. However, in the presence of an Ohmic quantum bath the system is unstable to long-range order in apparent violation of the Mermin-Wagner theorem. This remarkable finding suggests that there may be further examples where the presence of a bath radically alters the low energy physics.

The result on the Heisenberg chain was been established numerically using Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC). QMC is one of the most powerful tools to study the collective behaviour of many-particle systems at strong coupling. Two of the most used approaches to QMC in quantum condensed matter physics are the Stochastic Series Expansion method and the Continuous Time Path Integral Monte Carlo method. These have much in common but the latter is better adapted to the problem under consideration. However, the coupling to bosonic bath degrees of freedom has only been carried through for the former method. Therefore the first goal of the project is to adapt Continuous Time Path Integral Monte Carlo so that it can be used in the presence of a coupling to a bath. This is a significant step requiring careful theoretical work before implementing it computationally.

The algorithm, once developed, will be applied to some selected examples. The first example is the XXZ chain which is integrable for vanishing bath coupling and for which there is a controversy over the nature of the system as a function of the bath coupling. The second example is a higher dimensional quantum spin liquid which is of experimental interest.

Duration: The research fellowship(s) will have the duration of 3 months. It’s expected to begin as soon as possible and may not be renewed.

It is mandatory to formalize applications with the submission of the following documents: i) B1 Form – Fellowship application (https://ist-id.pt/concursos/bolsas/  ); ii) Curriculum Vitae; iii)academic degree certificate, where applicable; iv) proof of enrollment at a course that does not award an academic degree; v) motivation letter; vi) declaration on honour that the applicant does not exceed with this contract an accumulated period of two years in this type of studentship, continuously or with interruptions.

Applications must be submitted to the email: [email protected]
