Summary: A research position for 1 (one) Research Grant ("Bolsa de Mestre") is open at Instituto de Geografia e Ordenamento do Território, within the project Educação pela Integração - com a referência PT/2021/FAMI/713, funded by FAMI/European Union.

Admission Requirements: Master's in Human Geography, Anthropology, Sociology or related fields, which are enrolled in programs of PhD from the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of University of Lisbon, can apply for this call.

The candidate must:

  • Be enrolled in the doctoral (PhD) program at IGOT-ULisboa;

  • Have ease of expression, oral and written, in Portuguese;

  • Have good communication skills in oral and written English;

  • Have experience in conducting surveys and interviews;

  • Have interest in research on Migration;

  • Have experience in processing quantitative and qualitative data.

Project Summary:

EDUCATION FOR INTEGRATION Project - The Education through Integration Study: the Portuguese school system from the perspective of the integration of children and young people NPT immigrants residing in Portugal and asylum seekers arises from a partnership between Associação Renovar a Mouraria, Fundação Cidade de Lisboa, the Institute of Education of the University of Lisbon and the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning at the University of Lisbon, enhancing synergies among the third sector with proven experience in intervention in schools with children and young NPT immigrants residing in Portugal and applicants for asylum, and the Academy with its knowledge and methodological theoretical framework in area of ​​education and migration, ensuring the continuous deepening of knowledge on the phenomenon of migration and the dynamics of reception and integration. It is intended to improve the response of the Portuguese education system in integration of children and young immigrants and asylum seekers, presenting recommendations for public education policies and for schools. The Study will also have the collaboration of the Schools Group Patrício Prazeres, Gil Vicente Grouping of Schools, Grouping of Schools of Alvalade, PMAA - Portugal Multicultural Academy and NIALP - Intercultural Association Lisboa and is supported by FAMI - Fund for Asylum, Migration and Integration and co-payment of the State Budget.

Work objectives:

- Collection and analysis of documental and normative information;

- Systematic review of the bibliography;

- Conducting interviews, focus groups and applying questionnaires;

- Transcription, analysis and qualitative and quantitative treatment of collected data;

- Support in other project development tasks (memos and reports, seminars and workshops, etc.).

Workplace

The work will be developed at the Center for Geographical Studies of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon, under scientific supervision of Professor Lucinda Fonseca and Professor Maria João Hortas

Duration: 6 months. The scholarship may eventually be renewed, for an additional period, up to a total of 12 months.

Start date: scheduled to start in December 2021, on an exclusive basis.

Selection criteria:

Curriculum evaluation (CE) comprises the following parameters:

A – Final classification obtained in the Master's (25%);

B – Experience in functions described in the work plan (25%);

C - Evaluation of the candidate's profile, according to the objectives of the project, considering motivation, transversal knowledge in the area and demonstrated availability (50%).

The jury may, if deemed necessary, call for an interview (I) the candidates placed in the first 3 positions, which may be

performed by videoconference. The classification of the interview (I) will follow the following criteria:

a) Motivation for scientific research in general (25%);

b) Specific motivation for the area of ​​study to be carried out (25%);

c) Knowledge in the field of study to be carried out (25%);

d) Capacity for analysis and critical sense (25%).

In this case, the interview (I) has a weight of 30%, accumulating to the score obtained in the first selection phase, which will enter with a weight of 70%:

Final Classification = (CE × 70%) + (I x 30%)

The selection parameters are valued on a scale comprised between 0 and 20 values.

The interview (I) will take place at a date and time to be communicated opportunely to the candidates.

In case the jury waives the interview, the final ranking of the candidates will be made based on the evaluations obtained in the curriculum evaluation.

The jury may not award the scholarship if the candidates do not correspond to the desired profile.

The selection panel for the applications for this scholarship is composed of the following elements:

  • President of the Jury: Maria Lucinda Fonseca, Professor at the Instituto of Geography and Spatial Planning, University of Lisbon.

  • 1st Effective Member: Maria João Hortas, Effective Researcher at the Geographical's Study Center, IGOT, University of Lisbon; Coordinating Teacher at the Superior School of Education, Polytechnic of Lisbon.

  • 2nd Effective Member: Maria João Mogarro, Associate Professor at the Instituto of Education-University of Lisbon

  • 1st Alternate Member: Alina Esteves, Assistant Professor at Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning, University of Lisbon.

  • 2nd Alternate Member: Jennifer McGarrigle, Assistant Professor at the Institute of  Geography and Spatial Planning, University of Lisbon.

Results

The final results of the evaluation will be communicated to the candidates through notification sent to the email address indicated for this purpose.

If the result is unfavorable to the granting of the requested scholarship, the candidates have a period of 10 working days to comment, if desired, in a prior hearing to the interested parties, pursuant to articles 121 and 122 of the Code of Administrative Procedure (DL nº 4/2015 of January 7th).

The selected candidate must state in writing their intention to accept the scholarship. In case of non-acceptance, the scholarship will be awarded to the candidate in order of final ranking.

  • Proof of enrollment in a PhD's program at IGOT-ULISBOA;

  • Other supporting documents considered relevant;

  • Declaration of prior consent by electronic means.
