Research Grant n.º 7/2022 (for Law graduates)

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Deadline: 18 Jul 2022

The aim of this project is to build a White Paper on multiple and intersectional discrimination, based on multidisciplinary knowledge. It aims at a scientifically supported recommendation to level and harmonise anti-discrimination protections in Portugal, addressing multiple discrimination (sequential, additive and intersectional). The focus will be on discriminations based on sex, ethno-racial origin, sexual orientation and gender identity, and disability, also taking into account the differentiated socio-economic consequences of these discriminations.

The activities foreseen under this grant are: 1. Comparative analysis of Portuguese legislation and that of other European countries: a. the collection and analysis of Portuguese legislation on discrimination based on sex, ethno-racial origin, sexual orientation and gender identity, and disability, with a comparative analysis that identifies disparities in the respective legal regimes and institutional responses; a comprehensive analysis will be sought that focuses on the nature of each law (the dimensions of redress and of structural changes, namely through raising awareness or encouraging participation in the labour and public sphere) and that allows a critical perspective on its effectiveness and applicability. b. the collection and analysis of anti-discrimination legislation from other European countries, namely those whose legislation is comprehensive and allows multiple and intersectional discrimination to be addressed. The aim is, based on legal analysis, to understand the effectiveness of legislation in some countries with different cultural and social realities: Germany, Sweden, Greece; and a particular focus on legislation in Norway is also intended, through the partnership with Egalia. 2. Participation in communication and awareness raising activities foreseen in the project: a. the realization of a multimedia awareness campaign based on the results of focus groups, for dissemination on social networks, personalizing the experiences of discrimination and, in particular, multiple discrimination and contributing to a shared awareness on the need to create legal protection for these cases. b. the organization of a workshop and public presentation session of the project, with media broadcasting, which will allow the dissemination of focus groups results and simultaneously create an additional space for debate and joint construction of the different entities heard. c. the project's final conference, with the sharing of project conclusions and the White Paper, produced and made publicly available. d. the preparation and submission of a scientific paper for publication in an international journal. 3. Participation in the preparation and production of the White Paper, which includes a set of recommendations and guidelines to be considered in the development of new legislation, complemented by the suggestion of a basis for draft legislation.
