ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THE AWARD OF A RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

Title: Research Grant for PhD student in education sciences, psychology, sociology, management, economics or similar areas- 1 vacancy

Reference:

A call for applications is now open for the attribution of 1 (one) research fellowship grant for PhD students, to be supported by the Doctoral programme in Civil Engineering (PDEC) of the University of Minho, under the following conditions:

Scientific Area: Education sciences, psychology, sociology, management, economics or related areas.

Recipient category: Students enrolled in a doctoral course in the scientific area of the notice.

Requirement for granting the fellowship:

  • The applicants may apply without prior registration in the course for which the fellowship is open. The requirement to enroll in a doctoral degree course will be verified on the date of contracting the fellowship;
  • Only fellowships whose selected applicants present a valid proof of enrollment in a doctoral degree course will be contracted, issued by the academic services of the Higher Education Institution, indicating, respectively, the academic year or its duration (start and term).

Candidates profile:

  • Holders of a master's degree, in the scientific area of the notice, which constitutes the mandatory requirement;
  • Fluency in English. Independent user regarding the use of the language, and must understand from main ideas of texts on concrete and abstract topics, to technical discussions about their area of expertise;
  • Knowledge in areas of educational sciences, psychology, sociology, management, economics or related areas. Preference will be given to candidates who have had experience with activities related to postgraduate courses in a university framework;
  • In the contracting phase, the selected candidate must prove enrolment in a doctorate in the scientific area of the notice, in addition to proof of academic qualifications completed by the deadline for applications, including those resulting from academic degree recognition processes.
  • Applicants’ eligibility: Applicants must comply with the eligibility conditions laid down in article 9 of the Research Grants Regulation of Research Fellowships of the University of Minho (RBIC), published in Diário da República, 2nd Série, no. 119, through dispatch no. 6524/2020 of 22-06-2020, ratified by ratification declaration no. 447/2021 of 22-06-2021.

    Work plan and objectives to be achieved:

    The research to be carried out aims at the development and application of methodologies that promote individual and social competences in a multicultural environment of doctoral students integrated in an international course. These methodologies should also allow an integrative and holistic training in the context of current societal challenges.

    The work plan will integrate the following main areas:

    1) Study and development of new methodologies for cultural enrichment based on the multiculturalism associated to PhD students;

    2) Development of integrative approaches to responding to stress states and overcoming obstacles;

    3) Development of methodologies for identifying common interests in comprehensive training from the perspective of societal challenges;

    4) Socio-statistical and multimedia tools for publicizing doctoral courses and attracting talented candidates.

    This research context and methodological approach are in line with the development of a doctoral thesis in Doctoral Courses.

    Applicable legislation and regulations: Research Fellowship Holder Statutes, approved by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18, in its current version published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019 of august 28; Regulation of Scientific Research Fellowships of the University of Minho (RBIC), published in “Diário da República”, 2nd serie, no. 119, through dispatch no. 6524/2020 of 22-06-2020, ratified by ratification declaration no. 447/2021 of 22-06-2021.

    Host/Contracting institution and scientific supervision: The work plan will be carried out in the research centres ISISE, CTAC and CIED of the University of Minho, under the scientific supervision of the Professors José Augusto Palhares (CIED) e Joaquim António Oliveira de Barros (PDEC). A third supervisor may be added, depending on the selected candidate's scientific area.

    Fellowship duration: The grant will take place for a period of 12 months, with a provisional starting date on October of 2022. The fellowship grant may eventually be renewed for additional periods until they reach:

    Amount of the research grant: The Monthly Maintenance Allowance corresponds to 1391,22 euros/month, in accordance with the stipends values published in Annex II of the Regulation of Scientific Research Fellowships of the University of Minho (RBIC), published in “Diário da República”, 2nd serie, no. 119, through dispatch no. 6524/2020 of 22-06-2020, ratified by ratification declaration no. 447/2021 of 22-06-2021.

    Payment is made on the 23st of each month, through bank transfer to the Bank Identification Number of the fellow identified in the hiring process.

    Other benefits: Reimbursement of Voluntary Social Security (Social Security contributions), corresponding to the 1st level of discounts and personal accident insurance.

    Exclusivity regime: The grantee will perform the activities under exclusivity, as foreseen in article 5º of the Research Fellow Statutes and applicable regulations.

    Selection panel:

    • President: Joaquim António Oliveira de Barros, Full Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering of the University of Minho;
    • Effective members: José Augusto Palhares, Assistant Professor, Department of Education Sciences of the University of Minho; and José Luís da Silva Pinho, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering of the University of Minho;
    • Substitute members: Graça Fátima Moreira Vasconcelos, Associate Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering of the University of Minho; and Eduardo Nuno Borges Pereira, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering of the University of Minho.

    The first effective member will substitute the President of the selection panel in case of impediment, being nominate the first substitute member in the place of the first effective member.

    Criteria and procedures for applications assessment and selection: The applications assessment will focus on the candidate's Merit, following evaluation criteria, valued on a scale of 0 to 5 values (or another scale):

    Merit of the Applicant (MC) considering the following subcriteria:

  • Academic path, considering the classifications of academic degrees, with a weighting of 40%;
  • Personal curriculum, considering professional and scientific background, with a weighting of 40%
  • Motivation letter, with a weighting of 20%.
  • The final classification of the Merit of the Applicant (MC) will be achieved through the following formula:

    MC = (A1x0.4) + (A2x0.4) + (A3x0.2)

    Candidates classified in the first 4 (four) positions and who obtain a classification equal or greater than 3.5 in the MC will be admitted to the Interview (ENT), with the Jury proceeding to evaluate the following sub-criteria:

  • Interpersonal skills, with a weighting of 20%;
  • Knowledge demonstrated in the competition area, with a weighting of 50%;
  • Motivation, with a 20% weighting;
  • Fluency in English, with a weighting of 10%.
  • The interview classification (ENT) will be obtained by applying the following formula:

    ENT = (B1×0.2) + (B2×0.5) + (B3×0.2) + (B4×0.1).

    The final classification (CF) of the candidate will be obtained by applying the following formula:

    CF = (MCx0.6) + (ENTx0.4).

    If none of the candidates demonstrate to have an adequate profile for the execution of the work plan, the Selection Committee is entitled to close this call without selecting a candidate.

    The academic degrees and diplomas documents, are not mandatory in the application phase, being replaced by a declaration of honour of the candidate with the contents of academic results. The documents of academic qualification will be required in the contracting phase and must attest facts that occurred on a date prior to the application. In situations of divergence between the information contained in the declaration and the documentation submitted for contracting the grant, only the information contained in the latter will be consider. If the documents proving the ownership of the academic degree and diploma, under the terms of Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, do not correspond to the classifications awarded in the evaluation of the academic path, which can change the candidate's ranking, the fellowship won’t be contracted.

    Disclosure of results:

    The final results of the evaluation will be publicized through a list sorted by the grade obtained, posted in a visible and public place of the Hosting Unit, as well as by email to all candidates, attaching, for that purpose, the minutes with the deliberations of the jury, up to 90 working days after the deadline for submission of applications. The notification will be sent to the email address used/indicated by the candidates when submitting the application, with a message delivery report.

    Complaint and appeal procedures:

    In case of the result being unfavourable to the granting of the requested fellowship, the candidates have a period of 10 working days to pronounce themselves, if they wish, in the context of a hearing with the interested parties, under the terms of article 121º and 122º of the Administrative Procedure Code (DL nº 4 / 2015 of January 7).

    The final decision can be appealed, within 15 working days, with a complaint addressed to the President of the Jury. Interested parties may also submit an optional hierarchical appeal, addressed to the Rector in the terms number 3 of article 13 of the Research Grants Regulation of Research Fellowships of the University of Minho (RBIC)

    Constitution of a selection reserve list:

    In case of cancellation of the fellowships, within 6 months after their attribution, the vacancy(s) will be filled by the candidate(s) from the list of substitutes, according to the final order.

    Application deadline and submission: The call for applications is open from 22/09/2022 till 07-10-2022.

    Applications must be formalized by sending an application letter with the following documents: curriculum vitae; qualifications certificate or declaration of the applicant; motivation letter; statement proving that meets the conditions for the grant typology, according to the application requirements; and other documents important to the evaluation process.

    Applications must be sent by email to [email protected] , indicating the reference of the call for applications in Subject. Applications submitted by other means will not be accepted.

    Fellowship hiring: The fellowship will be attributed by signing a fellowship contract between the University of Minho and the fellow, accordingly with the contract minute (annex IV of the Regulation of Research Fellowships of the University of Minho (RBIC), published in Diário da República, 2nd Série, no. 119, through dispatch no. 6524/2020 of 22-06-2020, ratified by ratification declaration no. 447/2021 of 22-06-2021.

    The contract may only be concluded after all the documentation required is collected, which must take place within a maximum period of 6 months including evidences of the academic degrees or diplomas and enrolment in degree courses or non-conferring courses, depending on the type of scholarship.

    Once all the documentation has been received, the contracting entity has a period of 15 working days to conclude the scholarship contract, according to number 2 of article 15 of the Research Grants Regulation of Research Fellowships of the University of Minho (RBIC). Once received, the fellow must return the contract duly signed within 15 working days.

    The activities under the fellowship contract can only began after proper authorization by the contracting entity.

    Term and cancellation of fellowship contracts: Without prejudice to the other causes provided the fellowship regulations of UMinho and in the Statute of the Research Fellow, the fellowship ends with the completion of the work plan, as well as with the expiration date for which it was granted or renewed.

    At the end of the fellowship, the grantee is obliged to present a Final Report of the work carried out, in accordance with the objectives and evaluation criteria defined with the scientific advisor, within 30 days after the end of the scholarship.

    The final report must be prepared in accordance with Annex I of the Scientific Research Fellowships Regulation of the University of Minho (RBIC), published in Diário da República, 2nd Série, no. 119, through dispatch no. 6524/2020 of 22-06-2020, ratified by ratification declaration no. 447/2021 of 22-06-2021.
