Offer Description

A tender is hereby opened for the award of one Research Grant (RG)in the scope of R&D project ATLACE - Atlantic interactions via atmospheric water cycle: exploiting a unique dataset from the Antarctic circumnavigation expedition for better understanding of clouds and precipitation, CIRCNA/CAC/0273/2019, under the following conditions:

1. Scientific Area:Earth and Environmental Sciences / Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences

2. Funding Source: Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P./MCTES, through national funds (PIDDAC)

3. Admission Requirements: Students enrolled in Master in Computational Engineering.

Preferential factors : interest in atmospheric modeling, particularly in aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions.

The proof of enrolment must be made available until the contract is awarded, and the candidate may attach a declaration of honor to confirm that they meet the requirements for enrolment in a master's degree.

If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution it must be recognized by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of the provisions of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th, which approves the legal regime of recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of Higher Education, attributed by foreign higher education institutions, and of paragraph e) of no. 2 of article 4 of Decree-Law no. 60/2018, of August 3rd, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the hiring act .

4. Eligibility:  Applicants are eligible if they comply with paragraph a) of no.1 of article 2, of the Research Fellow Statute as amended by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th, as well as nos. 1 and 2 of article 6 of the Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology . The RG(s) awarded to undergraduate or master students enrolled in courses that do not confer academic degree may only be granted to those who do not exceed, upon conclusion of the grant contract in question, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of two years in that type of grant, consecutive or interpolated, under the terms of no.5 of article 6 of the aforementioned Regulations.

5. Work plan: The grant aims to support the activities of the ATLACE project, which aims to contribute to a better understanding of aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions associated with extratropical cyclones and their most extreme manifestations - atmospheric rivers. In particular, the candidate will:

- Apply a mesoscale atmospheric model with online coupling between chemistry and meteorology (CHIMERE v2023), studying cloud and precipitation formation and their dependence on the presence, quantity, and characteristics of atmospheric aerosols that can act as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and ice nuclei (IN);

- Assess the concentration of aerosols in the atmosphere, and their chemical composition, during episodes classified as "atmospheric rivers" that have affected the Iberian Peninsula and/or Antarctica;

- Contribute to the dissemination of project results through the preparation of publications and databases to be submitted to international journals and data repositories.

6. Applicable legislation and regulations: Statute of Scientific Research Grant Holder, as amended by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of August 28th; Regulation no. 950/2019, of November 29th, published in Diário da República, no. 241, Series II, of December 16th (FCT, I.P. Research Grants Regulation); Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16th (Legal regime for recognition of academic degrees and diplomas of higher education awarded by foreign higher education institutions).

7. Workplace: The work will be carried out at CESAM / Department of Environment and Planning of the University of Aveiro, under the scientific supervision of Doctor Carla Gama.

8. Duration of the grant(s): The grant duration will be 3 months, starting in May of 2024, and may be renewed until the end of the funding period. Under no circumstances shall it exceed the limits defined in nos. 3 and 4 of article 6, of Regulation no. 950/2019, of November 29th, published in Diário da República, no. 241, Series II, of December 16th (Research Grants Regulation of FCT, I.P.).

9. Amount of monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the grant corresponds to €990.98, according to the table of monthly maintenance allowance amounts set out in Annex I of Regulation no. 950/2019, subject to any updates that may be applicable, under the terms of no. 2 of article 18 of Regulation no. 950/2019, of November 29th, published in Diário da República, no. 241, Series II, of December 16th (Research Grants Regulation of FCT, I.P.).

10. Selection methods : The evaluation of applications will focus on the Merit of the candidate (MC), applying the items mentioned below with the respective valuation indicated in parentheses:

- Academic background (academic qualification) and motivation to study aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions (30%);

- Experience with programming languages used in the atmospheric modelling area (Fortran, C or C++) (35%);

- Experience with programming tools for data analysis (Python, MATLAB, or R) (35%).

The jury may choose to conduct interviews, if there are several candidates with a final MC score equal to or greater than 16 points (on a scale of 0-20 points). In this case, MC will have a weighting of 60%, and candidates who obtain a minimum score of 16 points in MC will be admitted to the Interview phase.

The final rating (FR) of the Candidate's Merit (MC) and Interview (INT) will be obtained by applying the following formula: FR = (MC × 0.6) + (INT × 0.4).

In the event that none of the candidates meet the profile suitable for carrying out the work plan, the Jury reserves the right not to award the grant, closing the competition without any recruitment.

11. Composition of the Selection Jury: The selection jury will be composed of Dr. Carla Maria dos Santos Gama da Silva, Junior Researcher (Jury President), Dr. Maria Alexandra Castelo Sobral Monteiro, Assistant Researcher with Habilitation, and Dr. Ana Isabel Couto Neto da Silva Miranda, Full Professor (Permanent Members); Dr. Diogo José Sousa Lopes, Doctoral Researcher (Level 1), and Dr. Vera Augusta Moreira Rodrigues, Doctoral Researcher (Level 1) (Alternate Members), all from the University of Aveiro.
