One PhD Scholarship in Linguistics (Phonetics, Phonology and Prosody)

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 16 May 2022

1. Tender open for the award of 1 (one) Scholarship for PhD students (Bolsa de Investigação).

This grant is funded by Portuguese national funds through Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, under project UIDP/00214/2020, of Center of Linguistics, from School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon.

2. The scholarship will be awarded for 12 months and may be renewed up to a maximum of 48 months and during the eligibility of the project.

3. The scholarship will be supervised by Sónia Frota (Full Professor).

4. A PhD scholarship on early markers of language development and predictors of language and communication impairments is proposed, to be developed within the projects on language development of PhonLab (and specifically the baby lab). The study will focus on infants/toddlers early speech perception abilities and the link between perception and early production. There has been recent growing interest in these topics, which are yet largely unstudied, especially in at risk populations and considering the specificities of the ambient language(s). By contributing to the early identification of risk markers, the study will have implications for the promotion of more effective methods of screening, prevention, early intervention and diagnosis in infancy, with social and economic benefits. The scope of the work is thus in line with EU societal challenges and UN Sustainable Development Goals in the fields of health and inclusive societies.

The selected candidate will work with researchers in phonetics, phonology, developmental and clinical psychology, psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics. Thus, the scholarship will provide the student with great training opportunities to acquire multidisciplinary research skills and knowledge.
