Offer Description

The Fundação Gaspar Frutuoso, F.P. is calling for applications for one (1) Research Grant (BI) for a graduate with a master's degree, within the scope of the research project IPM-Popillia. Integrated Pest Management of the invasive Japanese Beetle, Popillia japonica, funded by H2020 (grant agreement No 861852) under cc 1021.

 

 1. Purpose of the activity:

 

The grant holder's duties will include:

1) Extracting and preparing DNA from Popillia japonica for sequencing;

2) Carrying out biological tests with insects to extract RNA and prepare it for sequencing;

3) Carrying out tests with insects to extract proteins and prepare them for analysis;

4) Participation in the organization and management of biological material and databases relating to the IPM-Popillia project;

5) Participating in the organization of the 4th general assembly of the project, which will be held in Ponta Delgada.

2. Scientific Area: Biology

3. Admission requirements:

3.1 Degree in Biology;

3.2 Enrolment and registration on a master's degree course in Biomedical Sciences;

3.3 Training and experience in:

a) Handling living organisms, particularly insects;

b) DNA extraction and preparation for sequencing

c) RNA extraction and preparation for sequencing;

d) Protein extraction and preparation for analysis by electrophoresis and proteomics.

3.3 Communication skills and training in the preparation of research reports in the scientific area of this competition.

3.4 Knowledge of English.

3.5 Ability to work as part of a team.

 

4. Applicable legislation and regulations: Statute of the Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law no. 40/2004 of August 18, amended and republished by Decree-Law no. 202/2012 of August 27, by Decree-Law no. 89/2013 of July 9, by Decree-Law no. 233/2012 of October 29, and by Law no. 12/2013 of January 29, and amended by Decree-Law no. 123/2019 of August 28, in the wording in force (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/estatutobolseiro ) and FCT Research Fellowship Regulations, I. P, in force (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt ).

5. Place of work: The work will be carried out at the facilities of the Azores Biotechnology Center at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of the Azores in Ponta Delgada, under the scientific guidance of the project leaders Professor Nelson Simões and Doctor Duarte Toubarro.

 

6. Duration of the grant: The grant will last for 12 months, with the possibility of renewal for the duration of the respective project task, which is scheduled to end in December 2025 according to the grant holder's performance, on an exclusive basis, in accordance with the FCT's regulations for advanced training of human resources and under Article 5 of the Research Grant Holder's Statute.

 

7. Amount of the monthly maintenance allowance: The amount of the scholarship corresponds to €930.98, according to the table of values of scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the country (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt ), published in Annex I of the Research Scholarship Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), published by Decree-Law no. 350/2019, of December 16. The grant will be paid monthly by bank transfer. To this amount is added Voluntary Social Insurance, corresponding to the 1st step, if the candidate chooses to receive it, as well as Personal Accident Insurance.

8. Selection methods: The selection methods to be used will be as follows: curricular assessment, with a score of 100%. If the Jury deems it necessary, an interview may be held in the event of a tie between the candidates placed in the top two positions according to the ranking resulting from the previous criterion. In this case, the final score will include the curricular assessment (as described above), worth 90%, and the interview, worth 10%. If none of the candidates has the right profile (overall assessment of less than 50%), the grant will not be awarded.

 

9. Composition of the Selection Panel: The panel is composed of Nelson José de Oliveira Simões, President, and the members Dr. Duarte Nuno Toubarro Tiago and Dr. Hugo Ricardo Soares Monteiro.

 

10. Form of publication/notification of results: The final results of the evaluation will be published in a list ordered by final grade obtained, and candidates will be notified by email. The provisions of the Code of Administrative Procedure apply to this competition and, if the decision is unfavorable, candidates have a period of 10 working days to express their opinion.

11. Application deadline and form of submission:

The competition is open from February 2 to 15, 2024.

c) Curriculum Vitae, dated and signed;

d) A copy of your legal identification document and tax card;

e) Copy of the Certificate of Academic Qualifications, with a list of the evaluations obtained;

Holders of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions must have recognition of the academic degree required in this Notice under the terms of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16. Recognition of this degree must be obtained by the deadline for concluding the contract, if the candidate ranked in an eligible position has obtained the degree required in this Notice abroad;

f) A copy of the proof of enrollment and registration in the study cycle required in this Notice;

Proof must be obtained by the closing date for applications.

g) Other documents that the candidate considers relevant for curricular assessment, namely letters of recommendation and documents attesting to experience in the requirements mentioned in point 3.3 of this notice.
